We've seen more Common Scoters around than usual this autumn including a flock of 5 lingering off West Beach, Vatersay. A cursory scan today revealed a 6th bird with a chunkier head and bill: a young Surf Scoter, the second we've found on Vatersay this year. #BirdingScotland

Tough going again today in the continuing strong winds. This Grey Phalarope sought some relative shelter in the channel off Caoles, Vatersay this afternoon. #birdingscotland

Freshly ashore today and covered in barnacles, this Coconut on the west side of Vatersay is the only transatlantic vagrant we've found so far this week. #Beachcombing

The west beach on Vatersay, which has been the most southerly inhabited island in the Western Isles since 1912, when Mingulay was abandoned. Since 1991 Vatersay has been connected by a causeway to the neighbouring island of Barra. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Aside from the star rarity, Barra also provided excellent views of some Hebridean specialities, with both eagles, Merlin, and Hen Harrier seen. 19 Black-throated Divers (most still in summer-plumage) and a Bottlenose Dolphin were also seen off Vatersay. 2/4 #BirdingScotland

Black-throated Divers are starting to return to their wintering area off Vatersay. This one still in summer plumage was close in today. What an absolute stunner! #BirdingScotland

The fine adult American Golden Plover still hanging out with the Goldies north of Barra airport today. I finally got in on the Sabine's Gull fest when a 2 hour seawatch off Vatersay produced 4 Sabs heading south alongside a steady passage of Red-throated Divers. #BirdingScotland

Pleased to find a handsome American Golden Plover this afternoon on my way up to Eoligarry to lead another walk for Barra and Vatersay Ranger Service. Hopefully a sign of more Nearctic birds to come. #BirdingScotland #Birds

The cub scout was right cos it was blowin a gale n we was just sneaking round the corner to Vatersay. We crossed the next day when it had come down to a force 6 n everyone else was seasick so sailed it back mostly on my own.
The lethargy that come w it is the killer.

Another enjoyable guided walk on Vatersay yesterday afternoon. Lovely views of a golden eagle overhead, eiders in the bay, waders on the beach, flocks of twite feeding on seedheads on the crofts and even a glimpse of the late afternoon sun!

Thrift, also commonly known as as sea pinks, are found all around the shores of Barra and Vatersay especially on rocky shores. They are flowering now and will go on flowering into July. They are important for providing nectar to a wide range of insects.

Many thanks to the 18 volunteers who turned up to Uidh on Saturday to clean the shoreline. This is the third time this year this beach has been cleaned.A total of 106kg was collected - mainly rope and twine along with 14kg of plastics.

Machair is a coastal habitat found on the Atlantic or west-facing shores of Scotland, like in the Outer Hebrides.

It is a type of grassland made up mostly of shell fragments, giving it an incredible beauty.

Many thanks to Clare who helped Steve this Sunday with the beach clean at Vatersay West. Only 12kg of marine plastic collected which is good as it shows that regualr cleanups are making a big difference to our environment.
