Kestrel had escorted me there, sliding open the pocket doors disguised as more wainscoting on the upper level of the house. She pointed out a tall white cabinet to one side where I could find towels and extra robes, and an ornately carved dark cherrywood privacy screen where I could undress and leave my gown to be laundered. She had barely finished speaking before I’d slipped behind the privacy screen and begun peeling off my torn, dirt-covered dress. It pooled around my feet, and I didn’t bother to see if she’d left the room before I stepped out from behind the screen and padded softly towards the tub.

Well, best get it over with quickly, Skylar thought, tapping their screen to start. *** “Is the following said in a way that is intended to be ironic? It’s a pleasure to meet you.” “Nope, sounds genuine to me,” Skylar said. “The following issue is suggested to be put to vote. Does it follow ALCEFS’ standards, and if not, why? Rides at the amusement park should have shorter lines. You may review the standards if needed.” “No, because it’s not actionable,” Skylar answered. They knew the standards well enough that they could answer this without checking them. “To fit ALCEFS’ standards, it’d need to specify what measures should be put into place to make the lines shorter.” “Would you classify the following text as hate speech? Trigger warning for possible hate speech.” “Skip.” If it was, Skylar wasn’t in the mood to hear it. “Does the following text give a nuanced account of the war of 1812?” And so it went. “Would the following matter be more appropriately dealt with by a biologist or a biochemist?” “The following scenario is hypothetical. A spaceship is about to explode. A rescue shuttle comes to their aid, but can only fit three passengers. Ossian then bobbed his head in satisfaction before closing his eyes. The waters below them became choppy, pushing against the pilings supporting the quay. As the water crested over the stone, it became a mist wrapping around them. For a few brief seconds, it screened the Silver Cask and the rest of Fridhelgy from site. Runo’s vision went black as if covered by a coal sack along with it feeling as if the floor dropped out from under him. The hands on either side of him tightened as if expecting him to yank away.

His usual line, that Emmanuel was using him, didn’t hold water anymore, but that was always a screen over the truth anyway. Why didn’t Emmanuel understand? Was he really going to make Tennyson say it out loud? He turned back to Emmanuel with something like an anxious plea on his lips. “Because I’m a walking good-for-nothing disaster! All I’m good at is being a sarcastic asshole, and maybe a little at basketball, which you’ve never even see me play. What shows on the screen is difficult to make out at first glance. Then, I see it all. A sky-blue birthday cake. Snippet from Sigils of Redemption: Gladiolus pointed to her red hair tie. “What is on your wrist?” “Uh...” “Come with me.” He took his mighty boar spear and bashed the pole into the floor with three mighty clangs. Four armored angels descended upon Thalia and grabbed her arms. She was forcefully flown away. No amount of kicking or shouting made the holy spirits loosen their tight grips. Into a high tower, she was locked in a round room and thrown to the floor. “Asshole!” Thalia screamed as she hopped up and ran to the door. Two of Gladiolus’ angels crossed the exit with their spears. Thalia growled in frustration. “Move!” Her demand was ignored. Cussing more, Thalia looked around the room. There was a crystal glass window looking out into a beautifully manicured garden full of flowers. Her prison was fully furnished, with draping silks and artful moldings. A vase on a table looked like it was made of gold. Thalia picked it up. It felt like real cold metal, but she wondered if this was illusionary, like her motorcycle. The only thing she was certain of was that it was heavy. She threw it at the window. One of the four angels caught the vase in midair. They stared Thalia down while calmly returning to the side of the window. In return, she flashed a rude hand sign and then sat down to collect her thoughts.

Get ready for two eightdays of boring.” Clarke blinked. “How do you know—actually, can I watch?” “Why?” Beskros snorted. “Sure, if you want.” I let out a sigh of relief as the Human followed Beskros to the flight deck, only to find myself disappointed a few marks later when the Human burst back into the room. “Tai! It’s just panels!” she said accusingly, as if Beskros and I had somehow tricked her. I didn’t know what to say. What did she expect on a flight deck, giant panes of glass? A canopy poking out of the hull to let Beskros peer outside? Surely that wasn’t how it worked on the passenger ships she’d served on.

The gang is smoking a blunt in a hot tub and listening to Radiohead. Life is hard for the characters in my story.
“Thought we could use some tunes,” George said, still browsing his phone. Radiohead came through the speaker that was now glowing and floating around in the jacuzzi bubbles. Fake Plastic Trees was a nice selection, and hearing the music made me realize that I was feeling pretty high off of Deborah’s blunt. “This is a good song, hon. Excellent idea,” I said, leaning my head back against the lip of the tub. “Agreed. This speaker was a good choice,” Deborah said, putting out the blunt and handing the butt to George to drop in his ashtray. We sat there in silence for a long while, listening to Radiohead and being high. George picked up his phone and looked at it for a long time without touching the screen. It was dark, and his phone wasn’t illuminating his face. He was staring at the blank screen. “You okay there, buddy?” I said, giggling. “Yeah, I’m just gonna order a pizza, I think,” he said, then finally swiped the screen up, opening the phone. After a minute or so of pushing icons, he put it back on his towel. We sat there for another moment. “Did you order a pizza?” I asked, looking at him. He looked at me, and then at Deborah, then back at me. “Which one of you asked me that?” he asked, looking a little afraid. My god, was he high. “I did, you goon! Did you order a pizza or what?” I asked again, laughing. He shook his head. “Afraid not, I couldn’t remember how.”
