Bull kelp is scarce at this time of year, so this sea otter has chosen to rest on the rocks. Sea otters like to anchor themselves with bull kelp to avoid drifting in the current.

We had a wonderful start to the new year with this encounter involving a rarely seen killer whale! The individual in the foreground is known as T166A1, a 14-year-old outer coastal whale seen only three times in the last 10 years!

Young humpback Dragon (BCX2247) flukes up as she begins a feeding dive. Most humpbacks have left for the southern breeding grounds, but a few are lingering to “fuel up” before their journey.

Northern fur seals are a rare sight in the Salish Sea. We spotted this one floating at Race Rocks, occasionally being pestered by overly curious sea lions. Here we see it in the classic “jug handle” position, which is how they sleep in the open ocean!
