A sweet box, Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem,' a dwarf shrub with glossy, lance-shaped, evergreen leaves and tiny, tubular, fragrant flowers along its stems A Purpus honeysuckle, Lonicera x purpusii 'Winter Beauty,' a lanky shrub, deciduous in our climate, with long, skinny, currently leafless branches covered in small, white flowers. The flowers are white, with yellow anthers and five petals, four of which are fused into a tiny, scalloped-edged lace cravat. They smell strongly like lemon-scented soap, with an acidic, slightly musty undernote. A dwarf vernal witch hazel, Hamamelis vernalis 'Quasimodo.' A deciduous shrub, currently leafless, with small, citrus/spice-scented flowers. The flowers have four, thin long petals like paper streamers that are mostly orange but turn magenta and maroon at the base.

A 'Winter Beauty' Purpus honeysuckle, Lonicera x purpusii. Yellowish-brown, woody stems with rows of paired greenish flower buds fill the foreground. A human hand has been shoved behind the stems to help the camera focus. Behind, snow and dead leaves cover the ground. A 'Quasimodo' dwarf vernal witch hazel, Hamamelis vernalis. Branching, brown, woody stems are covered with clusters of dangling brown flower buds, which have begun to open, each flower resembling four mostly rolled-up streamers arranged in the shape of a plus sign.
