#TBBChat When I was younger I used to keymash. Now I only do that for the robot serial numbers. BUT, most of the time, I let the characters name themselves. I just keep writing them until a name majestically pops out of them.

#TBBChat not really. I feel like I start with one main character the story is centered around, and then I create characters as the story needs them, and start fleshing out those characters based on what the story beckons.

#TBBChat oh for sure. I'm drawn to traumatized characters. And even when I try to NOT write traumatized characters, they end up traumatized anyway.

Question for fellow writers: Do you intentionally write for readers who read to escape?
Or do you write your story first and hope it finds its audience?

Genuinely curious about different approaches!

It really is astounding how many people - whom you’d think would want their work shared and promoted - just don’t respond to media requests

You can take a horse to water… 🙄

If you are a business who can’t be bothered to have an ‘about’ page so I have to spend unnecessary time googling info about you you should be advertising yourself the chances of me writing about you are going to drop dramatically

Just saying

Me: I just asked someone a really agonisingly tough interview question 😬

Lovely JB: I’m sure it wasn’t that tough

Me: *reads question*

Lovely JB: Ohhhhhh 😳

Raiding my old draft to fill in a scene in the new. Showing what a lovable goofball my protagonist's best friend is. Too bad he's going to become a murder suspect.

I'm actually rewriting the whole damn book. And at the rate I'm going, it may be ready to query as early as 2035.

Today's goals:

1) Rewrite early scenes in deeper POV
2) Reveal more backstory without info-dumping
3) Try to get out of my own way so thematic connections occur organically.

Being invited to submit an invoice is the nicest start to a day. How did yours start? I know @thepaulconnolly.bsky.social was at the garage. Where were you? #writerchat

Entirely rewriting my opening scene. It's going to be much better, but my speed is molasses.

Fiction writers and editors, what's a favorite book that goes deep on some technical aspect of the craft? Deeper than a generic "how to write" book would be able to go? Please share what has helped you take your work to the next level!

I'm reading "Make a Scene" by Rosenfeld (or attempting to, while supervising kids). So far, I like it a lot.

What are some of your favorite books on writing fiction? Books that have helped you, personally, develop your craft?

#writinglifemonthly #writingcommunity #askanauthor #amwriting #writesky #writerchat Writing random scenes instead of writing straight through from the beginning to the end. The latter made sense, the former didn't. But it helps you understand where the characters need to go if you skip around a bit
