Success! We have a new living room media PC. Mint XFCE running on an 8 year old laptop.
This is the future of computing: An old-ass laptop using an older-ass desktop as a table, connected to a TV.

My go-to is Mint. It's a very easy distro to work with. You'll probably want the XFCE version if the Chromebook has low specs. I've heard good things about PopOS, too.

Linux is just a kernel (Android, for example, also uses the Linux kernel). Unless you're a hardcore console fan, you won't be using it. You'll have to choose between packaged systems: Debian, Red Hat, Arch, Gentoo, Slacksware... and graphical interfaces: KDE, Gnome, Xfce, LXDE, LXQt...

Xubuntu for me personally. All the elitists snobs will laugh, but Ubuntu really is decent nowadays for most people. Xfce is the greatest desktop environment.

Je quitte Windows adieu tout le monde. (sur le laptop tout nul pour les interventions)
J'ai opté un peu randomly pour Mint ce qui semblait à la fois windows-matrixed-friendly et sobre.
Quel gain en performance 😌

OK, as cool as this was, holy. CDE (and esque) is really not intuitive. like at all. Enjoy this revamped XFCE desktop instead. :D
Going to recreate this setup on my laptop when I get it, albeit under Arch.

the main question every linux desktop environment designer asks themselves is: how much padding should i put around icons? an insanely excessive amount or like a pixel?

My two Linux Mint runtimes, Cinnamon and XFCE!!! If you're new to Linux and are thinking about getting Mint, I'd definitely recommend Cinnamon! It's more stable and user friendly than the others, at the cost of some customization! (Remember, no Linux screenshot is complete without neofetch olololol)

tbqh idk i haven't fucked with xfce a lot. i like KDE (not necessarily the DE, I'm just comfortable with it, but the KDE group) a lot bc they make an insane amount of overlapping applications (unlike gnome which is kind of boring with that sort of thing). xfce seems cool though

meanwhile in xfce land: it just works. it looks stupid and broken -- look at that mess of a system tray, lmao -- but like. it looks like a taskbar! it's functional! i enjoy using it!
cannot say the same for the new hotness.

I mean
You could just install like Linux Mint XFCE or AntiX and not use Google’s trash OS.
I literally have AntiX installed on an HP Chromebook with a 16GB eMMC and 4GB of RAM and it runs fine.

For older computers, a lighter weight distribution might be a better choice. While Mint and Ubuntu are great for beginners, you might also consider versions with less demanding desktop environments like Linux Mint XFCE or Lubuntu.

That's what I did with an old system at home. xfce is really nice and there are no issues with use.

I switched my dad's old computer from Windows 10 to #Linux Mint. It's better in almost all ways! His desktop is low on specs and was often running slow. Last week it was unusable! Mostly browses the web and uses MS Office. #LibreOffice found him right at home. And #Firefox replaced Edge 😊💪
