#abstractions
Come on… admit it… everyone recognises that last one.

Too strapped for time.

Too strapped for cash.

Who’s got time to deal with such abstractions like the next pandemic.

shocking that i can be 100x more productive in a codebase that uses standard coding conventions for the language and doesn't have 40,000 generics based abstractions relying on inscrutable type inference to work in any capacity

shocking how that works

You can't have a real conversation about shit going on in real life if you're too scared to say the damn words to describe it

You're not speaking truth to power through cutesy abstractions and memes that trivialize the shit we're talking about

Marshall your anger and fucking say the words

I know I’m a massive fan boy and can’t shut up about @oxide.computer buuuut, you should really, really watch this talk by Bryan.

It’s tremendous.

”Abstractions allow us to build software systems that do sophisticated things; they are the shoulders we stand upon - and provide to others”

Good abstractions hide the irrelevant and simplify the essential.
Bad abstractions hide the essential and complicate the irrelevant.

Human Nature is a spook / abstractions and a bourgeois concept

The lies can work when they're about abstractions or something distant, which few can evaluate themselves. Vaguely-defined voter fraud in another state, for example.

The lies falter when they try to tell the public that something many are directly experiencing isn't happening. See also: COVID.
I was really worried about this basic idea. Propaganda being able to overcome facts on the ground.

But I think they picked the wrong fight here. Inflation, shutdown, deportation. These aren’t fooling people.

Maybe an “insurrection” following violent protests would have been a better issue.
The whole GOP shutdown strategy is hoping that sheer force of propaganda can convince the public that things getting worse does not reflect badly on the people in charge of the government, and that hurting America more will get Democrats to acquiesce to the Trump admin hurting America in other ways.

ICYMI: "Still, the embodied complications of an accelerated puberty are more interesting, and more frightening to me, than the well-trodden sci-fi abstractions of what makes a human."

This is it exactly. SNAP and the ACA are abstractions to them, but the airports are very much not.

That famous decision where a fellow USA gen x person who likes normal USA gen x music is doing nostalgia and then asks what you've been listening to and do you be normal and say "I still love Pixies as well" or do you be honest and say "I mostly listen to electro-chaabi street rave abstractions."

it's no coincidence that marginalized people are drawn into movements like this; the 19th century spiritualists were conspicuously female. mystification is a process of obtaining agency, and that complicates any simple dismissal of AI spiritualism as ignorance

Out side of calc one I can think of ~1 time I have used it. Principally limits are taught because it is an important step in your math maturation to get to those sorts of abstractions.

Which has changed some of my opinions, tbh—I think there’s more room for informational/empowerment prompting that can get people further than I have, but at the end of the day you still have to be able to understand what it does even if the abstractions simplify the day to day.

latest development in the robot vacuum control system is that ive built enough abstractions to be able to say "make robot A follow robot B" and its pretty funny to watch one try to clean while the other keeps bumping into it

The second episode of my new Don't Imitate Understand podcast is out! In it we talk about an important skill that leads and devs should have: the ability to be Abstraction Breakers.

Web dev is an ecosystem of leaky abstractions. Good architecture means understanding them. 👇

Hey, we play Dixit at ours as well. Lovely imaginative game and my kids enjoy it as much as my wife and I do. I love how it helps them form and bridge together abstractions.

The 2008 crisis is archetypal. Real people buying mortgages carry real risks, which can limit returns. So invent abstractions that supposedly separate investments from underlying risk (the "stuff"). Of course, you can't really do that forever without the messy stuff reasserting its felt presence...

Striking contrast with the seemingly endless supply of op-eds, cable news appearances and Substack posts where eminent pundits inform us that normies don't care about airy abstractions like authoritarianism and the rule of law.
The more democratic elements of the American constitutional and economic order are actually throwing up road blocks to Trumpism. Protests and boycotts and low level courts and juries and cetera. Elite actors on the other hand are all too frequently caving. Fascinating study in who actually cares!
