The Overton window is not just an academicky trope. Moving it has consequences. What the #BrokenTimes should position as threats of illegal imperialism it instead normalizes as "hints."

"Material analysis" (I need a less academicky term for it) is a really important concept to internalize as well—it means the way we understand the world has to be rooted in the physical and material as relates to human needs. The ground we walk on, the food we eat, shelter for our children.

‘Is this how you approach people you’ve never met at parties?’

I want to ask randos who enter academicky conversations on here with dismissive snark about someone’s viewpoint—validated by their apparent belief in a complete and perfect knowledge of a topic and the correct way to discuss it […]

Book #72: Interviews and thoughts on the importance of friendship to activism. Lots of interesting people, though a little academicky, if you know what I mean.

Chat: “Wait. You know Sharlayan scholars??”

A’ine, desperately evading like its a raid mechanic: “Sharlayans a great place fer’ fishin’, lots of water! An’ you over’ear a lot o’ crazy academicky stuff over there, most of it goes riiight over me ‘ed though.”

To be clear, I don't think "academicky" is a problem!

And I think I misunderstood OP: I read it as "why isn't there any?", but their reply sounded now like "can somebody link me to some?"

Here's one of the earliest pieces I wrote, and it's public, so not academicky:

How AI is hijacking art history
Breathless headlines of artificial intelligence discovering or restoring lost works of art ignore the fact that these machines rarely, if ever, reveal one secret or solve a single mystery.

This was an important empathy-realization for me, a city Catholic raised in a very academicky household and a liberal academicky parish. My positive experience of Christianity growing up looked nothing like the Christianity a lot of people got in their childhoods.

I’ve been told I tend to be too serious, philosophical and academicky, so thought I’d try a cross-gen pop culture poost: Not even Barney Stinson would have thought Indiana Jones was the bad guy.

I don't know, whenever I find one I look at the books they've been reading and they don't look like fun to read to me... getting academicky would be fun.. my fun might not be other people's idea of fun

I thought book clubs were very serious places where people were academicky outside of school??
I want a... not a seminar.. a Wait what is the structure of book club meetings? I have never been. Is there structure?

Times Higher Ed Asia-Pacific editor John Ross:

"In the meantime, universities could help rehabilitate their image by acting more academicky and less Wall Streety. Resisting corporate extravagance and secrecy would be a good start."

The last paper I graded this term turns out to be a delightfully messy, totally unique, 16-page ramble through a student's thoughts about Cuaron's ROMA. After wading through the chatgpt submissions, the no-shows, and even the stuffy academicky 8-pagers, this is such a total pleasure. A+ for Jayden!

(Following you! This is my alt. I'm elsewhere doing academicky things, but not on Kpop. Hope that wasn't a specific requirement.)

Just watched #thesubstance. I’m sure I’ll have some film academicky stuff to say about it once I’ve got over the actual experience of watching it…. #substance

Thanks - are we all over here now? I guess we are all here. I should start acting all respectable and academicky, then.

I know this isn't actually the rant you're on, but it's somewhat related & I always love the chance to recommend a book if the opportunity arises :) So JUST in case you hadn't seen it about, this is a good one if you're feeling a bit academicky about popular culture and depictions of war.

There's Cambridge Elements and the Oxford Very Short Introductions (30-40 pp) but those are academicky.

Who has a great Word of the Day app recommendation for me? All the ones I’ve tried so far are operating at a high school level. I prefer something academicky if possible. Bonus points if it can be a widget on my desktop.
