Handwritten diary entry reads as follows: Day 15 The last elf, Robin,squeezed down the toilet chute with seconds to spare before the fire ripped through the outhouse, incinerating everything. It even singed Robin’s hat as the toilet seat closed overhead. But everyone was safe for now. They all trudged back along the tunnel in a gloomy silence. The threat of the Dragon, the terrible power it had was all too real now. They all wondered how many of their friends had not been as lucky as they just were. Coming back to the recycling facility felt good though. It felt like a little oasis of warmth and hope in the wilderness. Funny how all the other elves hated this place. Holly thought that perhaps, when all this was over, she might ask for a transfer here. She was just getting out some of the advent gingerbread to share around when someone came over and said, ‘Erm, do you know that a parcel arrived for you. Come this way.’ They looked about as confused as Holly felt. A parcel delivery? In the middle of all this! Holly was too exhausted at this point to make a comment and just followed along. And there it was a huge parcel - not a parcel through, not really… a present. Now Holly was really confused, who was sending her a gift, right now? Right here? She looked at the label and at least some of the confusion started to clear. ‘Holly, I think you might need this. Give my regards to Mr Treacle. Yours sincerely Father Christmas’ Intrigued and a little apprehensive, she tore open the wrapping paper.

Hand written journal entry - reads as follows: Day 10 And there, on the screen, Holly sees someone she’s been half expecting. Firbolger! Former shift leader and all round shitheel. An elf who was fired by Santa personally, shortly after Holly arrived. He was caught running a black market scam in reindeer scat. Running it right out of North Pole HQ. Reindeer scat… well scat from Santa’s magical reindeer is a highly addictive, psychedelic drug for humans and elves. Firbolger was cutting it with so much sawdust from the shop floor that it was almost useless, but not before he’d got his customers hooked. And the delivery mechanism? He hid it amongst the toys so that Santa did all his deliveries for him by sleigh. He might have gotten away with it, except a rival gang of humans found out and decided to cut out Firbolger. They made the reckless decision to kidnap a reindeer from themselves, from Santa on Christmas Eve. Peak delivery time! The whole scam came out. Father Christmas fought off the gang, single handed and then Firbolger was sacked and escorted off the premises. And now Holly sees him. Bold, strolling into the staff room to open the presents under the tree. Presents from the elves to each other. Not some corporate mandated ‘Secret Santa’, the real thing.

Day 7 reads as follows (including over the page) Day 7 Of course, Holly didn’t see any of the Dragon’s attack. She hears it though. The crashing, screeching of metal, Fidget’s swearing, the alarm and the abrupt ending of track 2 of the Festive Mega Mix No. 237. She hears all of this from inside the day’s door of the Advent Calendar. Her hands sticky from the gingerbread she was about to throw at her colleagues, ensuring that shift starts with ‘max high morale!’ Holly peeks through the crack around the heavy cardboard door and watches the Dragon’s minions start to swarm down through the hole in the roof. She realises this is her best chance for escape and wriggles back down a hidden tunnel and into the basement via an air duct. Got to preserve the magic, so each day’s Advent Surprise elf has to sneak in and out of the calendar. Holly has never been so grateful for the ridiculous Christmas traditions management insist on. For now she is safe, undetected and free. Quite forgotten. But what next?

Becky's Advent of Adventure playthrough Day 0 and Day 1. This is a photo of Becky's handwritten solo journal entries for the game. Entries read: Day 0 my character is Holly Cheersmith, a young, ambitious elf who has been working on the toy shop factory floor for 2 years. Refusing to wear the traditional red/green colours preferred by the other elves she dresses only in black and wear noise cancelling headphones on the production line. Holly is constantly bringing new ideas for unusual ideas to her boss Supervisor Snowy Sugerplum. All those ideas are soundly rejected. The Vomiting Puppy Toy was apparently 'certainly unique, horrifyingly so' and yet also 'not serving our user's needs'. But ideas come easily to Holly and she is hard to deter. Back to the assembly line for the Robot Gingerbreadman... for now! Day 1 North Pole HQ is an odd beast. It is a huge toy factory and distribution center. But in a misguided attempt to make it less 'corporate' it is decorated in a jarring, clashing, tidal wave of Christmas decorations. Bright, loud, glittery, excessive. It is hard to work out where the machinery starts and the decorations begin. Two months of production time was once lost because one elf was pulling on a fake candy cane instead of the lever for the packaging machine. There is a little map showing the ground floor layout, factory, distribution center, sleigh loading bays, staff canteen etc. The upper floor is out of bounds to most elves being the 'creation palace' for the main ideas man... Father Christmas himself.

Hand written diary entries in a journal against a background of golden stars. Diary entries read: Day 4 Most elves hate the recycling facility at North Pole HQ. It is a huge junkyard out past the stables. Materials are delivered there once an hour by handcart. But the elves who run it are very different to Toy Floor elves. In fact these elves are a bit more like Holly. They dress in dark colours so the dirt doesn’t show, wrapped up in lots of layers against the cold and snow. They are generally considered to be a bit strange. After all, why would you choose to work in a haunted, toy graveyard in freezing temperatures dealing with rubbish all day. Doesn’t everyone prefer the warmth, lights and the glory of making brightly coloured gifts that actually get delivered? Day 5 Christmas night is a favourite time of the year for Holly. The Toy Floor holds a huge party just as Father Christmas leaves on The Sleigh. Holly and Fidget can sneak away from all that to the recycling facility and spend time with their friends amongst the teetering piles of broken toys. The Recycling Elves through their own party with a huge bonfire at the centre, made from all the materials that cannot be reused. There is hot chocolate and mince pies and ghost stories told late into the night. It is a smaller, simpler gathering than the main party. But out under the starts and snow it is perfect.

Handwritten journal entry reads: Day 14 This whole mission turned out to be a huge near miss. Mr Treacle was not taken randomly, the Dragon needed him for something - just like the Recycling Elves and the Dragon was on his way to outhouse number 5 and he arrived at about the same time as Holly, Peppermint and Robin. Not good! The door banged open and the hot breath of the Dragon blasted through the door. The gaping hole was immediately filled with a giant, malevolent eye searching for the team. Could they get to the escape tunnel in time?

Advent of Adventure handwritten diary page that reads: Day 11 Sitting looking at all the cameras was fine but Holly was itching to do more. Realising that these weren’t all super-powered creatures like the Dragon - but instead elves, just like her; that is what changed everything. Knowing that gave her a new found confidence and she started looking for opportunities, chances, weak spots. And suddenly there it was! Very few elves like the recycling facility. That is true of the current employees and it is true of most of the elves who have ever worked here. And because of that Holly thought to check back over the old recordings from the moment the Dragon arrived. Two elves were sent to keep an eye on the recycling facility, they were far away from the area itself and doing a terrible job. Now Holly had a plan and a place to head for.

Image of a handwritten diary entry that reads: Day 6 It was first thing in the morning at shift change on the toy shop floor. A terrible screeching sound started up, coming from the roof. It was so loud it drowned out the music of the Festive MegaMix No.237 which was on repeat (guaranteed to boost productivity by 5%). The screeching was soon followed by several huge rents appearing in the ceiling. The claws of a giant dragon peeled back the roof like it was the top of a tin can. Cold air rushed in along with snowfall and the creature’s own foul breath as it peered down at the elves. Greedy eyes taking in the scene of chaos and confusion below until something caught its eye. Fidget, quick thinking as ever, had pressed the shop floor alarm and started trying to evacuate employees out through a fire door. She had even managed to grab her fire warden’s high vis jacket from somewhere. This was not according to the creature’s plan. It picked up a piece of heavy machinery, the 3d Candy Cane Printer 9000, and hurled it towards the fire exit. It landed, blocking the escape route and trapping Fidget, breaking her leg, in one smooth movement. Everyone was shocked (except Holly) when sweet Fidget screamed out in a voice full of pain and anger ‘I will gut you like a fish you mother fucker!’ If anyone gets out of this alive then Fidget just blew her Conviviality Bonus and promotion prospects.

A handwritten journal page. Entry reads: Day 9 The intruder elves got to work quickly, resounding up the employees and even Santa. It was a blow to morale when he was brought out in chains to sit with the rest. They herded everyone into the stables with the reindeer and locked the doors leaving the Dragon sitting outside, the only place it could comfortably perch. This also kept Santa and his elves well away from the main North Pole HQ. Leaving the building totally unoccupied for the Dragon’s forces to do whatever they liked. Well, almost unoccupied! But what is it they want from Santa’s Toy Shop?

Day 3 Christmas is always an odd time at HQ. It is far busier than usual with huge amounts of extra deliveries arriving each day. From December 1st a few things change. First is the giant advent calendar on the workshop floor. Every day at 9.15am the assigned door opens and a member of staff jumps out dressed in a costume. Their job is to throw gingerbread at the other employees whilst enthusiastically shouting out the day’s targets and reminding everyone how little time remains before ‘C’ day. Holly was devastated to learn that this year, she was nominated to be Day 6 in the secret ballot. Surprise! The best thing about Christmas at HQ is the canteen options. The food gets really good with pudding every day in the run up to ‘C’ day, keeping the workforce well fuelled and happy. Today is Holly’s favourite - jam roly poly and custard.

Handwritten journal entry for Advent of Adventure that reads as follows: Day 13 A short reprieve in the recycling facility where Holly could see some friendly faces, get a cup of coffee that could strip paint and make a plan for her next steps. The Recycling Elves had not been idle though! They were building what could only be described as the Festive Tank Mark 1, built of toy cast-offs and broken bits of sleigh. There was nothing stealthy about it, although it was sturdy and covered in top grade flame suppressant paint. The elves had even started constructing a sort of ballista mounted on top. But they’d hit a problem, their top engineer, Mr Treacle, had been swept up in a raid and was being kept nearby before being transferred to the stables. They needed him back to complete it. Holly didn’t hesitate, she knew exactly where he was from the security cameras and she knew there was a secret tunnel connecting that particular outhouse with the recycling yard. Two Recycling Elves went with Holly, Robin and Peppermint. Equipped with torches they crept down the ice tunnel until they were underneath outhouse number 5, then they burst up through the long abandoned toilet chute straight into the room where Mr Treacle was being held.

Handwritten journal page from advent of adventure: Day 8 entry reads: Day 8 Holly snuck through the access tunnels finding her way to the security room. Until this point Holly just wanted to run and hide. This was terrifying, an invasion. She didn’t know what to do. But in the quiet and dark of the basement, she calmed down, just enough to decide to at least get more information. Maybe she could find others who had escaped the initial attack. The security room had camera feeds from all over North Pole HQ and Holly could see it all. The first thing she noticed was, of course, the Dragon. Just squatting there, large and menacing. But she knew it was not alone, it had come with back-up and now she could see that back-up more clearly. What at first looked like indistinct black shapes, now became clear - these were more elves, Holly even knew some of them. Former workers at HQ who left under ‘difficult circumstances’, even a few current employees from different shifts! Why are they doing this!? How did the Dragon persuade them to attack the HQ?

Holly makes it out of the tunnels and meets up with some friends.

Hand written diary entry. Entry reads: Day 12 Holly runs through the access tunnels until she can see the recycling facility and a clear route in. Luckily she is wearing her usual all-black outfit. To think that earlier in the day she was worried about getting a reprimand for not wearing the compulsory ‘outfit of spontaneous cheer’ that the day’s Advent Elf was ‘encouraged’ to wear. Black against the dark Polar Night sky was perfect. The two unfortunate elves ‘guarding’ the recycling facility were clearly visible; but the Recycling Elves had not been idle. They were bunkered down with plenty of supplies and were not coming out. The Dragon’s two elves were too afraid to go in. A perfect stalemate. Holly jumped into an automatic recycling truck - they were still running. It carried her right to the facility entrance, unfortunately it was at this moment that one of the elves got shouted at over the radio for not doing their job properly and so they both came over to inspect the cart. Holly panicked, frantically looking for a solution. Just when all hope seemed lost a ghostly and terrifying bellow screamed towards the Dragon’s elves. The shrieked and ran away in fright, dropping the radio in the process. Holly scooped it up and made a run for it into the yard. Only to be greeted by a small know of Recycling Elves, falling about laughing, clustered next to a make-shift loud speaker.
