#FossilFriday This morning we were shown a Ruby Ranch wood site preserving insect frass (poop). More importantly the site looks like extremely rare pollen site near Aptian-Albian boundary...fingers crossed. Very promising..screen wash for micros..too... @utahpaleo-ufop.bsky.social

Welcome back to #fossilfriday

Here is the fresh water Dastilbe elongatus. This specimen comes from the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian) Santana Formation in Serra de Araipe, Brazil. The Santana Formation is well known for its exquisite preservation of pterosaurs fossils.

Further along the coast to the east there’s some nice Albian sandstone and marl, sandwiched between Cenomanian and Aptian strata as part of a big syncline.

Lovely sedimentary structures and some cute trace fossils - mostly Thalassinoides.

What's also cool, tho less tied to Sissokosuchus itself, is the geographic interpretation of the Continental Intercalaire of Mali. In short, its proposed that these sediments date to the Aptian to Albian and might be the downriver section of a larger west African river system

Diatoms are "recent"? 🤯

"First recorded occurrences of diatoms are from the Jurassic, however, these are uncertain and the earliest recorded well preserved diatoms are centric forms from the Aptian-Albian stages of the Cretaceous."

There really should be a Middle Cretaceous Period, consisting of the Aptian, Albian, and Cenomanian Epochs. Maybe there's some historical reason there isn't, but it seems odd to me. A *lot* happened during those ~ 28 million years.
