Rebecca though… I tried to darken the pic but it ruined the original sense of her squinting in the harsh midday sun, and didn’t really improve her appearance.

The issue isn’t only her lighting. Some aspects I do like but I missed the mark, am not satisfied and owe the poor girl a redraw.

Test - seeing if a lightened picture of Samir is better for visibility.

I had planned for him to be in midnight gloom, catch your eye with the gold and then have you peer a little as the rest emerged, but tech snafu = hard to see his lovely face.

Yeah I think that was the problem. Drawing on phone in a dark room with auto-brightness on.

I did use backgrounds to reduce eye strain but forgot I was choosing the values on a brighter than usual screen - for an already darker piece. 🙄

This threw everything off in normal light.

On phone in a dim room Samir looks ok? Warm skin tone, distinct background, shows details. Bright room = the picture is flat and too dark.

Maybe the screen auto-adjusts? Values initially chosen on a bright screen due to dim light now look wrong? Same w my landscapes :/

Thinking about Rebecca and Samir.

I’ve been working on improving at Black skin tones and features but I really want to work on my lighting too.

Especially for intense mood lighting. Either extreme takes more care than I realised.

Perhaps I should first get the basics…

Imagine getting so good at art that you could look at a stylised character and use photo references and your own interpretation to make it look like a drawing of a real person. Just for fun.

Life/art is stressing me out so badly rn I can’t really practice or learn.

But. Goals.
