well puffins are part of the same family as great auks the Auks/Alcidae family :}
though the great auk got the short end of that deal with it being flightless compared to the other pelagic birds in that family group who all can fly lol but! fun note, they are not related to penguins

2/ On to the birds!
Here we have the skuas {well, the ones close enough to try for and that I actually hit in something approaching focus, anyway..😞}
We have here a Pom and three Arctics, a light an intermediate and two dark morphs, and all of those are not necessarily in that order. 🙃

Spent a couple of mornings at The Naze over the last few days! No sign of Little Auks but did manage Pallas’s Warbler, Yellow-browed Warbler (heard), Firecrest, Arctic Terns, RTDivers, Common Scoters, Gannet, and plenty of common shorebirds. #Birding #EssexBirding

Well... possibly. The online Oxford English Dictionary says the following, but it's accompanied by a long set of notes which suggest that the the great auk might originally have been named after a place, i.e. a white headland or island. Great auks themselves didn't have white heads.

Sea watching yesterday morning was certainly worthwhile, with Leach's Petrel, Grey Phalarope, 3 Little Auks, 2 Sooty Shearwater and over 3000 Razorbill and 1000 Kittiwake. We also had over 3500 Starling coming in off over the sea.

The coast was full of little high points with Little Auks, Cattle Egrets, murmurating Starlings & a Barn Owl although I think that seeing Yellowhammers was the highlight for most of the crew. blueeyedbirding.blogspot.com/2025/10/norf... #birds

Seawatching was a real highlight of our week in Cornwall last week. The sheer number of seabirds passing was incredible to see. A Great Northern Diver whizzed through Pendeen too

resources (including damage to the environment we all share through pollution but also ecosystem function failure). The true 'tragedy of the commons' was not the regulated common land but unregulated fisheries, or the byproduct the uncontrolled usage of Great Auks as food by fishing crews a major
