#backcasting
So far this is science fiction. It feels like a mashup of Dean Koontz's Demon Seed, and Christopher Fowler's Seventy-Seven Clocks -- with a dash of HP Lovecraft (hence the shoggoth logo).
But the makers did a good job using a "backcasting" strategy.

It’s the year 2035, and China dominates the South China Sea. How did we get here?

I like this "backcasting" approach to looking at the situation. If we look forward 3 years and assume he's not just running, but is on the verge of winning -- there are some really big things that would have to stay as they are now, or shift in his favour. And 3 years is a long time.

The very thing (among others) we have been discussing in GEOG3180 Management of Wilderness & Global Ecosystems @universityofleeds.bsky.social backcasting from Robert Crumb’s final 3 panels in his “A short history of America” to today. Challenging stuff.

Forecasting can be useful, but when we want to chart a path to a truly sustainable future, backcasting seems like the way to go.

You can also try backcasting. Pick a future where you succeed, then work backwards to figure out what steps you need to take now to get there.

This process builds a strategy that works under different conditions. It helps you make decisions that keep your daily actions tied to a strong […]

👉 We had the great chance to organise a Stakeholder Event joined by external planning policy experts. Participants learned about the emerging findings on #CircularConsumption practices, and engaged in participatory backcasting across key #CircularHousing and #Mobility visions for the future.
🌍 Shaping a #LowCarbon Future: #CircEUlar convened in Berlin for a 3-day project meeting!
It was an opportunity to review progress, share research, amd to host stakeholder workshops connecting the team with external experts and policy actors.

A new mobility model uses backcasting to plan shared autonomous vehicle rollout, finding operator costs can drop 10% versus forecasting while emissions stay flat. https://getnews.me/backcasting-guides-shared-autonomous-vehicle-adoption/ #backcasting #sharedautonomousvehicles #decarbonization

Thanks for your answer.
In my town, The Hague, it all looked promising, with a 👌 backcasting study, and the first step to emissions targets - I agree with you completely, that’s the way. But then there were elections, the political balance shifted, and all was off the table. It is so difficult.

Anything that resembles backcasting is going to be at least good. This, however, is great.

Slightly depressing that by far the least plausible aspect of this “backcasting” scenario is the notion that 🇦🇺 would have an LOSV operational to be sunk in the SCS!

Backcasting: Shaping Future Cities for Climate Resilience
In the face of accelerating climate change and rapid urbanization, the imperative for sustainable and resilient urban development has never been more urgent. Traditional approaches to urban planning often fall short in addressing the complexity and unpredictability that characterizes contemporary urban challenges. Against this backdrop, the backcasting scenario approach emerges as a groundbreaking methodology that pivots the planning process towards desired future outcomes and works backward to identify necessary steps and interventions.

The starting context maybe is important.

I continued what I started months ago for the Groophz Nation vision.

Meanwhile there are a lot of concepts in it.

I just added backcasting to it.

After asking for future studies from 2025 I recognized that it already had processed some of them.

The Marginal Decade—typically the last ten years of life—is where the quality of life becomes most fragile. Declines in mobility, cognition, and independence become more likely. But instead of fearing this phase, Dr. Peter Attia recommends a bold strategy: backcasting - and train for it.
“The Marginal Decade: Why Your Last 10 Years Start Now”
Dr. Leahcim SemajPsychologist | Author | Speaker | Management Consultant | Spiritual Guide | Social Philosopher This blog is based on Chapter Seven of my book "Body Works: Exercise, Fitness, Strength, and Longevity for the Anchor Leg": Train Today for the Life You Want at 100: Mastering the Centenarian Decathlon and the Marginal Decade In the Anchor Leg of life, we often hear the question: “Do you want to live to 100?” But here’s the real question: What kind of life do you want to live when you get there?

Ok, how does this work?

Backcasting from a Gaian Bottleneck scenario, we are in effect seeking to de-extinct the clade that comprises the biological component of Gaia as an individual.
