North Korea has Kpop stars and resorts now but yeah ... backwaters ... like detroit.
This is less true. The US has been challenged by many rising powers - Imperial Germany, fascist Italy, Imperial Japan, the USSR, and the Third Reich. None of them still exist. Iran, Cuba, and North Korea remain backwaters.
But antagonizing the rest of the world is a terrible way to contain China.

Yes the reason people feel they were protected/blessed (by Schumer) is that none of them are up for reelection before 2028. Consequences would be losing plum committee assignments. Put them in backwaters.

It ties into nostalgia for parts of the U.S. that are themselves economic backwaters and not wanting them to be influenced by places where people actually want to live.
incredible that these guys have a massive hard on for a country that, if it were a state, would rank behind kansas in terms of wealth and which would be a total backwater if it weren’t economically integrated with more functional countries

Those cities are “big urban centers” though, by your definition. There is nothing that makes rural backwaters more legitimate politically or socially than cities. Pretending otherwise is very ideologically dubious territory.
