#bibliometrics
Interesting. ResearchGate has notified me of a citation of an article of mine from a new article of mine which doesn't _yet_ appear on the journal's website. Clearly been ingested somewhere before the release announcement has been posted.

(Yes, I self-cite when reasonable. Bibliometrics, man.)

Come to my talk tomorrow! I will be looking at the bibliometrics of the free energy principle framework: is it a degenerating research programme? #psaatw #philosophyofscience #fep #actinf #friston
Tomorrow 6 November is the first of three meetings of the PSA Around the World! A fantastic online program with plenary panel and parallel sessions. All welcome! Note: time zone is 3pm CET.
Check out the program in the thread! 🥳

Anyone else going to the LIS-Bibliometrics conference in November? Just had it all officially confirmed, I'm presenting a talk: "Disciplinary differences in databases: lessons from an institutional case study at the University of Nottingham"

“Perhaps one advantage of mathematicians is that they are not easily impressed by numbers, and we have the means to understand and analyze them...

“And so, the conclusion is very clear: The correlation between bibliometrics and research quality is so low that we should not use bibliometrics”
Math has publication fraud, too.

For a long time, mathematicians thought that as long as they keep away from predatory journals or paper mills, the problem does not affect them. This turned out to be wrong.

Proposing the use of bibliometrics in the early stages and planning of evidence synthesis projects. Allows scoping, understanding of the topic. Things research could bring to their committee to emphasise the power of their argument #ESIcon24 I think I’m getting this now.

Performance appraisal will need to change in the coming years. Can the culture of academe adapt and move away from publish or perish gauged by bibliometrics.

I’m with you: bibliometrics is a blunt instrument unless you spend SO much time and money on it, it becomes the monster tail wagging a small dog. As in happens, Google catches a lot of useful citations. Like the ones in foreign languages missed by ISI and Scopus and PubMed.

How do you know if our policy impact grant is right for you?

We invite anyone to apply, particularly:

- Researchers in the early stage of their career
- Staff who don’t perform research full time
- Those looking to establish themselves in the fields of scientometrics, bibliometrics, and more!

Has anyone here ever done a coverage analysis of #scihub for certain collections? Is there an API where I could query for #doi prefix etc.? Or a list or whatever?

Is there maybe a study with a good methodology section on something similar?

Nicely interactive session this - Sergio’s asked us why where’s here at this panel. Lots of responses - mine was that in Business ‘Systematic Literature Reviews’ they often want to limit to ‘High quality journals’, discovered through bibliometrics. I have regular discussions about this. #ESIcon24

Yeah I’ve always thought other disciplines should adopt it as well—largely because it isn’t scalable and I’m a little bitch about the problems with scholarly publishing and bibliometrics in particular.

My “publish less stuff, but make it better” campaign has been long and lonely.

This workshop will cover how published research outputs are measured at the article, author and journal level.

In the second half, we will move into a more hands-on phase, to give you the opportunity to explore how to improve your research profile and evidence your strengths using bibliometrics.

📊 Scientometricians have found that while “unfinished” projects tend to produce fewer papers and citations, they are no less novel, and often just as capable of disrupting established scientific paradigms, as “completed” ones: doi.org/10.1016/j.jo... #Funding #Innovation #Evaluation #Grants

I’d also argue that a more useful endeavour would be trying to come up with a metric to show impact - and how that has changed. But that’s hard. So fall back on bibliometrics, and Google Scholar and WoS would be your friend there. But where do you put the bounds of your search…?

I have learned a lot about quant from working with my PhD student Jeremy McLaughlin who is working at the intersections of book history and historical bibliometrics. But also I might be predisposed to like what he's doing bc it sounds like my go-to trick: "bibliography has always (already) done X."
