James this article is a little disappointing. Which of the big BECCS / bioCCS offtakes are "harvesting wood?" All that I can think of MSFT or Frontier buying are using residues as feedstock. This balance is not reflected in how you've presented the "objections" to BECCS.

Hey @mircosoft.bsky.social buying CDR credits from Oslo's waste incinerator is the wrong move. BioCCS comes from biowaste—new EU rules mandate separate collection. That waste should become compost, not CO₂. Soil needs nutrients, not smoke.

If we can only scale up sequestration to a couple of hundred Mtpa by 2050, bioCCS will not be sufficient to offset all aviation, shipping, etc. This will then manifest in scarcity pricing for the sequestration, like we see today for the Northern Lights project in Norway.

Pohjoismaissa historiallinen jättiharppaus teknisten nielujen toteuttamisessa. Stockholm Exergi julkisti investointipäätöksen, jossa otetaan talteen biogeenistä hiilidioksidia ja varastoidaan sitä pysyvästi (bio-CCS).

I’m a lot more skeptical on CDR deployment but it pains me slightly that the policy framework emerging in Europe seems to benefit BioCCS projects over CCS projects that reduce emissions (e.g cement, ammonia etc) because they don’t receive additional revenues as they don’t sell credits.

I am not proud of all formulations in the report, but I am still sure large scale CCS is inevetible if temperture incease shall be limited tö 2C. This will include BioCCS from paper&pulp and inceneratiion, but also from power industri. There is no realitic emission scenario without this ingrediens.

Yeah I agree. I know a big fermentation plant in central Europe who spent years listening to RFNBO developers talking up efuels but couldn’t make a business case even with a free stream of pure bioCO2. They’re now doing bioCCS themselves and full chain costs are like €50-60/t.
