After a month of research in #Porcupinebank on board #VizcondedeEza in the wild waters west of #Ireland, we're finally at home! The most amazing #seabird sighting was a South Polar skua! @rspb.bsky.social @irishbirds.bsky.social @ieo-cadiz.bsky.social Ireland waters are always a box of surprises!

Superb photo!
Just a comment on your caption re ageing it: vermiculations and pale bill base can be shown by winter adults; it's a 1w because of retained juv GC - duller and brownish with ragged pale tips, see the new black inner GC.
Great to be able to see such detail!
It's tricky enough to see a Great Grey Shrike these days, let alone take an image as superb as Lee Fuller's, which makes him a worthy winner of a very strong Photo of the Week selection on Monday:

Galveston, upper Texas coast this am. What appears to be a Vega Gull, the recently split Siberian counterpart of the Herring Gull complex. We had a good gull day.

I completed the Swainson's and Grey-cheeked Thrush illustration over the weekend. It was really enjoyable to work on these 2 subtle American vagrants that I was lucky to see earlier this Autumn close to home. #donegalbirding

And here it is! This glorious flight shot was taken by Mike Edgecombe @mikee100.bsky.social as the Pallid Swift whizzed below the two of us along the undercliff at West Runton this afternoon. A gorgeous subtle bird & so instructive too.

Great comparison.

...and that bird of the day was...
Baltic Gull ~ an outrageously black-backed adult with minimal mirrors, an almost cachinnans-vibe around the head, a colour tone like nothing else on the scrapes, a brown wash on the tertials, bright bare parts...

Boom! All the 'red-tailed shrikes' done in Suffolk this year with Isabelline Shrike at N Warren this afternoon. Made sweeter as it is a grip back for me too, having missed the previous birds. No matter what anyone says to me, I can't see such pale birds not being isabellinus

Much is sometimes made of not being able to accurately judge size and structure when it comes to Goshawk and Sparrowhawk.

This is the reality.
If you ever wanted to know if Goshawk and Sparrowhawk are identifiable in just size and gizz....now you know. 😂😍 #birds #raptors #birding #finland

Baltic Gull from last night's roost out on Pat's Pool. Such a striking bird & great to see it in (at first) OK light before the gloomy dusk descended. As my friend Chris Gibbins said in a text last night, this one is as good as it gets.

I think bluesky needs a #BirdID feed. So I built one.
To start it off, and topical to the #irishrarebirds feed, a blog post on Tundra and Taiga Bean Goose identification.

LESSER KESTREL on #StKilda! Retrospectively identified from Will Miles' excellent images on 16th Sept. We'd recorded a Kestrel from 12th, possibly the same bird, but sadly not relocated today.

So I did not list this guy today. It screams adult female shoveler to me with that long bill. Merlin and iNaturalist disagreed with me. Anyone care to comment? #birdID #birding #birdphotography

This one clip has so many different species at the wildlife Pond. Can you tell how many species at the wildlife pond?

How many do you see throughout the whole clip?

This is the same film. I just posted, but I’m trying to add the quality by trying a different format. Blue Sky is not letting me upload quality videos lately. I think probably there’s just too much on the server now.

Is this better quality and is this a brown creeper ?
