🌱 Year one and the pollinator garden is doing well, especially the liatris (prairie blazing star).

A Monarch butterfly with orange and black wings is perched on a tall stem of purple flowers, identified as Liatris ligulistylis or Meadow Blazingstar. The butterfly is feeding on the nectar from the flowers, and a bee is also visible on a lower cluster of blossoms. The background is blurred, with green foliage and brown earth.

the top of a scaly blazingstar, a short raceme with five composite flowers, which have around a dozen or so pink-purple disk florets but no rays. the disks on the top two flowers have faded, turned brown & wilty. the fourth flower is easiest to see & is in full bloom. the color of its disk florets is vivid & their bifurcated styles are comically long. several rows of green floral bracts at the base of each flower are long, pointed, and hairy.

several flowerheads near the top of a tall stem, each with over a dozen bright purple-pink, tubular disk florets with five pointed lobes & long split styles. below the florets, there are rows and rows of green & purple hoary, rounded phyllaries that curve out away from the columnar flowerhead.

there are two cylindrical composite flowers here, representing the very tip of a terminal raceme. the flowerhead on the left has eight or so blooming florets, bright purple-pink, some with long split styles, others fading. the flowerhead on the right has just a single floret open. this photo shows the base of the flowerheads well: between the flowers' stems and the bright florets, there are rows of scale-like, appressed, green and magenta phyllaries, mostly rounded but coming to an acute point at the tip.

a composite flower with over a dozen light, bright purplish pink disk florets and no ray florets. each disk floret is has a tubular corolla with five pointed, spreading lobes, and a long, bifuracted style that runs through a dark purple fused stamen tube. reddish purple bristles run up along the outside of the corolla.

two southern blazingstars growing in a patch of savannah among grasses, in front of some slenderstalk beeblossoms. the blazingstars are chest-high and leaning to the right. many lance-shaped green leaves grow alternately on the tall stems, many with budding flowerheads on their axils. the flowers are successively more developed nearer the top of the stems, which terminate in a few flowerheads in full bloom, each with over a dozen bright purple-pink florets with long styles.

a composite flower with long, bright purple-pink disk florets but no ray florets. each floret has five narrow lobes at the end of its corolla tube, and an extremely long bifurcated style sticking way out. the styles are lined with tiny little hairs, some of which hold on to tiny grains of pollen. there are gaps within the flower disk that suggest the absence of florets already faded or not yet opened. the base of the flowerhead is obscured by shadow due to the angle of the sunlight.

these barrelhead blazingstars are relatively short compared to other species in their genus; these here wouldn't even come to knee-high if they were standing upright instead of slanted at an angle. they are a little difficult to make out, in part because their grass-like green leaves blend into the grass in which they grow. at the top of the blazingstars there are short and sparse racemes of cylindrical flowers, with rows of scale-like involucral bracts leading up to the florets at their tip, bright purple-pink with long split styles.

I've started to appreciate the plants that stick around =) Saltbrush, dwarf rabbitbrush. I guess the dotted blazingstar that showed up this year can live 35 years and resists drought and fire.

Though I need to rethink this rabbitbrush thing... I can see it taking over.
