Photo taken in my own back garden ~ South Wales A starling is a noisy, social bird, about the size of a robin, known for its glossy, dark feathers that shimmer with purple and green in the light, speckled with white in winter; it's easily recognized by its distinctive chattering calls, its habit of visiting gardens, and it's incredible ability to mimic sounds, often seen in huge, swirling flocks performing breathtaking aerial dances called murmuration's.

If you're wondering why I'm spamming Bluesky with backyard feeder bird photos it's because I spent 1.5 hours with the porch door open (driving the heating bill through the roof I'm sure, windchill was -5F/-20C) to get better photos of the leucistic American Goldfinch in the yard.

Four photos of a small finch, which typically would be a yellow-gray with dark wings this time of year. Instead the bird has a snow-white belly, white on the top of its head, and white splotches on its back and wings because it is missing pigments there. In this photo it is showing off its belly, sitting atop a feeder. Now it is clinging to the side of a sunflower seed feeder, showing off its pink legs and splotches on its back. A different angle of the bird clinging to the other side of the seed feeder, with a pink and gray House Finch below it. Now you can really see the white splotches on its head. Same bird perched atop the feeder pole again, now giving us the side view of the splotches on its back and head and cheeks.

Good morning Thursday, friends at Bluesky. Waking up again in the dark and looking through previous years' winter photos: Three moose at the edge of the forest was a fantastic encounter!
The ground is covered in snow and the edge of the forest is almost black in the gray morning light. Three moose disappear almost into their winter fur, but I saw them nonetheless.

shift manager Chad of Bluesky lore welcomed us to Easterly after dark this week for a glimpse into the life of night shift.

we talked to Chad and John and Jimmy and took photos of Tim and the treatment plant in a light few people ever see.
