this is definitely true - up until now BNPL has been small enough that you didn't have to pay close attention to get a feel for consumer credit conditions/debt. But BNPL is growing fast enough that's becoming harder to justify.

I would be curious what the average BNPL interest rate is for the typical borrower versus the same borrower’s credit card APR. Just from seeing ads, it seems likely it’s lower.

it's the same phenomenon with bnpl stuff, but bnpl is even more evil than credit cards in the way that it's marketed to make you more tempted to buy things you don't need - and worst of all unlike credit cards, it's too easy to apply and get approved for a bnpl

Very cool new paper from @danielmangrum.com and others at the NY Fed investigating BNPL. Conclusion: BNPLs are negatively-selected to consumers with worth credit, meaning the space is generally expanding credit with its growth.

As far as I can tell from the article, it's that BNPL companies promise 0% interest, but bury in the fine print the fact that if you ever miss a payment, there is in fact a lot of interest. They also do not make it easy to determine how much you owe in total and when exactly it is to be collected.

i used bnpl programs not to buy luxury accessories, but to survive. it was and is catastrophic for so many people.
(i don't mean that I'm ethically better having used it for groceries and not gucci or whatever. no judgment. it's a monstrous system for everyone.)

Don’t spend money you don’t have. BNPL is debt, not a payment method. Period.
Financial products like BNPL are a behavioral nudge and are habit inducing - they deepen dependence on debt. Delinquency rates among GenZ are already reportedly high. We’re hurting our younger generations in so many ways.

I fear the bubble isn’t AI (at least not yet) it’s consumer debt.
I think they can hold the facade longer than people can keep their heads above water.
Btw sports betting, BNPL, student loans, and housing, we are cooked. If anyone knows how to short the auto market…

I'm sceptical of bnpl, but if you can keep to the payment schedule, maybe this is an okay thing?

30 years ago we took out a 5k loan to take our 2 kids to England for 3 weeks. Best BNPL vacation ever, didn’t regret it for a minute.

There's $5trn of consumer credit outstanding, BNPL is not a significant number relative to that total (yet).
Also buy-now/pay-later debt.
