High and Low/Tengoku to Jigoku/天国と地獄 (1963) - **** In the first scene of High and Low, Kingo Gondo (Toshirō Mifune) defends his belief in making high quality, durable shoes, even if means a smaller profit margin, to a trio of executives who want a shoe that's cheap to make and will wear out before too long. In the final scene, he comes face to face with Genjirō Takeuchi (Tsutomu Yamazaki), the young man who kidnapped Gondo's chauffeur's son - a mistake, as he meant to abduct Gondo's son - and extracted a ruinous ransom which Gondo, after wrestling with his values, paid, only to see public opinion praising the man he sought to tear down.
