Have been patiently awaiting all year for this delicate beauty to open. It had almost released it's petals fully Monday afternoon when I last saw it. I truly hope it isn't bloomed out by the time I return Friday. One of my favorite orchid children. 🙏

I DO like #orchids other than Paphs and Phrags, promise! (Lady slipper orchids, with that weird pouch-petal called a lip)

I get pretty nerdy in the ALT txt, ya'll. Also some #orchid cattiness. (Cattleyas are boring. There I said it.)

It's so humid too, it's awful.
The only orchid of mine that's still blooming, it's lasted a really long time. The brassavola "lady of the night" is looking too tired for a pic, 🤭.

One of the orchids I took over from my mom is in bloom, and I've never seen its flower before!

Unfortunately, she doesn't remember what kind of orchid it is. Brassavola maybe? 🌱

Turns out, when you're friends with #orchid growers, and you volunteer to help with your local #orchidsociety show...

You come home with over a dozen plants, only about a third of which you paid for.

Multiple #brassavola nodosa and its hybrids (not pictured) blooming here right now. Between them they gas us every night with a heady, smoky perfume. When they first start up I think they smell a bit like bacon. 🥓 #orchid #plants #bloomscrolling

The Brassavola Orchid, "the orchid of the Virgin" scientifically known as Rhyncholaelia digbyana, was declared as the national flower of Honduras by Decree No. 96 in the National Congress of Honduras on November 25, 1969.

Bc. Keowee ‘Mendenhall’ is a hybrid between Brassavola and Cattleya, known for its vivid yellow petals and boldly spotted lip.

It’s the first Cattleya-type I’ve bloomed. If you’re new to this group, this is one worth growing.

This is the orchid Brassavola nodosa, or the ‘lady of the night’. Growing in Latin and South America, the lady produces a strong sweet fragrance at dusk to attract its main pollinators, moths. The lady can be epiphytic (growing on other plants) or lithophytic (growing on rock).

I wouldn't go from moth orchids into Vanda orchids as your next step. That tribe needs to be bareroot or meticulously planted and watered every day during the growing season. Brassavola, Oncidium, and Cattleya hybrids are better choices for a new orchid enthusiast looking to branch out.

So no Vandas for me. Fair enough, as I’m currently in my Brassavola hybrid era anyway:”.

Brassia? Brassavola?

If you live in a subtropical zone like I do , my brassavola nodossa has exceptional fragrance at night because it wants to attract moths. Can you set yours outside in the evening?
