livestock, blighting crops, or spreading illness often reflected village tensions more than truth. In many cases, such women were victims of fear and jealousy rather than evidence. Mary Pannell (Castleford area( and Peggy Farrow (Elloughton-cum-Brough) are examples. Image John Ash CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.

No, there's only space for two carriages in Leeds station. The platform they use can take 4, but half is for Sheffield and they need to park the Castleford train in the other half simultaneously

Not sure if will be interesting to see. It's a bit the same with Albert Wainwright. There are a lot of people living in Castleford that are new to the town.

I mean, there’s the obvious one that fits in that category? His name was on the roll of honour at Castleford Grammar School (it’s in Castleford library now) and I recently discovered (whilst watching a documentary from 1969 now in YouTube) that he made it and scratched his name into the back when…

I couldn't agree more. I am just collaborating on a piece about a very successful guy in the arts from Castleford who I would imagine 80% of the population of the town as never heard of.

Fizzy drinks are older than you might think! 🥤 They were invented in the 1700s.

John Lumb and Co in Castleford made this codd bottle for a local fizzy drinks manufacturer.

By 1900 Castleford was producing 20 million bottles a year. It became Britain's biggest centre of bottle manufacturing.

As someone who was brought up in Castleford, and secondary schooled in North Featherstone, I have been fascinated by this bit of local history for a long time. I’ve always wondered about the possible Irish connections of James Duggan and how his story might tie in to the influx of Irish workers…

Thank you. It actually started out as a talk I gave over in Castleford and then developed into the Bylines piece. What was really encouraging is that around that area it is still an important piece of local history.

This conjures up the evocative smell of maltkilns. We still have Fawcett's in Castleford, and in the right climatic conditions, it is reassuring to still detect the aroma of a traditional process going on in a place where many other businesses are long gone.
