The Huaneng Longdong coal plant is boasting of a 1.5 mtpa carbon capture facility: but the most recent Global CCS Institute report says the pipeline can only transport 0.2 mtpa. What happens to the other 1.3???

LNG/nat gas are as bad as oil, unless he regulates methane emissions.
Considering he’s referring to CCUS, a tech which is capturing 30% of carbon emissions, when he speaks of cleantech, I’m nowhere as optimistic as you are.

The budget doc celebrates intensity reductions in oil production but there’s no mention of an oil pipeline in 500 pp. Pathways CCUS is still on the strategies list, with a promise of tax credits at a lower level to 2040. What is in there? \7

Yes. On console it's still just fortnite/minecraft/roblox. But this has been happening for a while. Helldivers II, Silksong, I mean name your viral game it's PC where these games are really showing up (and why the Steam CCUs can mislead when people try to extrapolate them to total market).

I am not saying that we pursue CCUS at all, but …

1. Technology & scalability
2. Used to prolong fossil fuels
3. Energy intensive
4. Risks - storage, ground water contamination, carbon leaching out
5. No reduction in downstream emissions
October 31, 2025 at 3:36 AM
Banks continue backing fossil fuel expansion, harming human rights & biodiversity. Their so-called “sustainable” finance often includes false solutions like CCUS, biomass, or fossil hydrogen—not a just transition.
October 22, 2025 at 7:23 AM
Reform food systems. That won't be sufficient, but climate, biodiversity, resilience, health & more would be addressed simultaneously. But that is 'politically difficult' while tech like DAC & CCUS are currently the darlings of politicians around the world.

Yes, this! 💥 Thank you @aradwanski.bsky.social. As someone who used to sit down the hall from 75 years (or more in cases) of provincially funded research on EOR and CCUS often in partnership with NRCan, ECCC, NRC and others for which energy companies now entirely directly benefit... sigh.
I hate to keep picking on The Hub, but there is such a bizarre, mythologized version of Alberta’s oil history as purely free-market triumph at play here - omitting everything from AOSTRA to to TMX, with lots in between (and even before). thehub.ca/2025/10/07/r...

There's a very nice new report from @climateanalytics.org on precisely this: "Hard to abate" has become its own form of subtle climate delay --->>

With today’s news from Smith that she frames as part of a grand bargain (we’ll do pathways ccus if you give us a new pipeline) let’s not forget @cathmckenna.bsky.social ’s key point
October 1, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Just as adding a filter to a cigarette doesn’t promise cancer-free smoking, pairing oil production with carbon capture doesn’t actually decarbonize the fuel. Here's Catherine McKenna on the grand bargains being discussed and why she sees CCUS as a dead end.

delay the phase-out while extracting more and more dollars from our petro captured governments. @thejuicemedia.bsky.social has a great video about the global ccus scam, and I've seen little evidence that much has changed in the years since it was made:

New report reveals Shell was able to sell millions of ‘phantom’ carbon credits in Alberta for the Quest project -- getting paid for emissions reductions that never happened

How will Min. Freeland make sure the CCUS investment tax credit doesn't do the same?

If the big polluters stop reporting their "calculated" emissions and never measure their real emission then technically there are no emissions (Trump's covid theory ). This makes the carbon credit markets or expensive CCS and CCUS redundant
Win win for the deniers .

"As we look ahead to COP28, therefore, we should not allow strong calls to deploy both CCUS and CDR to feed into the myth of “business as usual” for the fossil fuel industry"

Good report on CCS but when I read stuff like above: how are you doing that? Are you calling out ADNOC? Or Oxy? Or Exxon?
Scaling carbon capture and carbon removals does not mean business-as-usual
The ETC tries to bring clarity to the debate around carbon capture and removals. Both will play an important role in the transition, but must be used as well as, not instead of, fossil fuel use reduct...

#PublicAccountsCommittee published its report on #CCUS today. Read our response. There MIGHT be genuine uses for #CCS in hard to abate industries. There is no justification for power generation. No justification for slapping that load on #BillPayers.

Danielle waxes lyrical, salivates about O'Leary's snake-oil AB data centres demanding massive GW supplies from new nat-gas power generation. Zero jobs, increased pollution, taxpayer subsidized infrastructure & CCUS?
With ON increasing the call for power from 5000 to 7500MW, and BC already looking to their next call after closing on 5TWh/yr of wind yesterday, while AB is embroiled in to-be-legislated market changes, it’s hard to see investment coming to AB any time soon (but for contracted off-grid).
Good news from Ontario ⚡️

The province is expanding electrification by ramping up their call for new power by 50%.

Bigger, cleaner, smarter electricity systems will be critical to delivering new investments in the clean economy and cut emissions.
