Petra Nova Captures More Than Five Million Tons of Carbon Dioxide —Carbon reduction equivalent to removing approximately 1.2 million passenger cars from American roads for a year— Houston—February 17, 2025—Petra Nova, the world’s largest post-combustion carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) facility, has safely captured, transported and sequestered more than five-million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). “We are very excited and proud that we have captured five-million tons of CO2, significantly reducing the environmental impact of coal-fired power generation,” said Toshiya Nakahara, President and CEO ENEOS Xplora. “This first-of-a-kind project has proven that carbon capture can prevent millions of tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.” During operations, Petra Nova separates and captures 90% of the CO2 from a portion of the post-combustion flue gas at one of NRG's W.A. Parish Power Plant coal units in Texas, USA. It then, transports and injects that CO2 into the West Ranch Oil Field approximately 80 miles southwest of the plant to enhance crude oil production while simultaneously sequestering the CO2 underground. The Petra Nova facility can capture approximately 1.4 million metric tons of CO2 per year. By utilizing the 5 million metric tons of CO2 at the oil field, ENEOS Xplora has significantly increased the production of US domestic crude oil at the field. The captured CO2 is sequestered more than a mile below the surface of the earth in the oil reservoir. Extensive monitoring has verified that the sequestered CO2 remains in place in the field.

Considering he’s referring to CCUS, a tech which is capturing 30% of carbon emissions, when he speaks of cleantech, I’m nowhere as optimistic as you are.

The budget doc celebrates intensity reductions in oil production but there’s no mention of an oil pipeline in 500 pp. Pathways CCUS is still on the strategies list, with a promise of tax credits at a lower level to 2040. What is in there? \7

Conclusion The persistent classification of iron and steel and cement as “hard-to-abate” sectors has shaped both policy and industrial responses in ways that risk undermining the urgency and effectiveness of global climate mitigation efforts. While the technical and process-related challenges in these sectors are non-trivial, the evidence presented in this report demonstrates that their decarbonisation is not only possible but highly achievable with existing and emerging technologies—especially when guided by integrated, whole-of-system approaches and supported by robust policy frameworks. A narrow focus on production-side constraints—such as process emissions in clinker production or the fossil fuel dependence of BF-BOF steelmaking—has encouraged decarbonization strategies put forward by the industry to rely heavily on CCUS and offsetting as core mitigation strategies. This framing assumes that a substantial portion of sectoral emissions are unavoidable, which justifies delayed action and continued operation of high-emissions infrastructure. However, our analysis shows that much of what is labelled “residual” or “unavoidable” emissions can, in fact, be abated at source through a combination of clean technology deployment, material efficiency, and demand-side reductions. In the iron and steel sector, commercially available technologies—particularly electric arc furnaces (EAFs) coupled with high scrap availability and direct reduced iron (DRI) using green hydrogen—can replace the BF-BOF pathway. While steel production capacity is long-lived and capital-intensive, studies show that aligning investment timelines with early retrofit and decommissioning schedules could reduce cumulative emissions by up to 66% over 2020–2050, compared to just 47% if low-carbon measures are delayed by five years.

If the big polluters stop reporting their "calculated" emissions and never measure their real emission then technically there are no emissions (Trump's covid theory ). This makes the carbon credit markets or expensive CCS and CCUS redundant

With ON increasing the call for power from 5000 to 7500MW, and BC already looking to their next call after closing on 5TWh/yr of wind yesterday, while AB is embroiled in to-be-legislated market changes, it’s hard to see investment coming to AB any time soon (but for contracted off-grid).
