How NOT to design a conversation
A conversation with the chatbot for IHG, a hotel conglomerate. I tell the bot that I've reset my password, but I can't log in with it. The hotel responds with "I understand what you said, but I have not been taught how to answer your question…yet." This is unhelpful. The chatbot should have fallback options (help docs, an option to chat with a human or call one, etc.) to help my solve my issue, which is preventing me from making a booking with them.

- who controls the avatar (both person and company)
- to what extent was this based on her as a person vs pasting her face on a chatbot
- to what extent do we pretend that this is the real mom

More and more it seems like AI's primary value proposition is unmooring people from reality in some way. Also, I can't help but laugh at the idea of using this to talk to Grandma instead of its far more likely use, which is people finding 3 minutes of footage of someone and making a sex chatbot

They provide some facsimile of companionship while allowing users to avoid uncomfortable interactions or reciprocity. “In the extreme, it can become this hall of mirrors where your worldview is never challenged,” Vasan said. And so, although chatbots may be built on the familiar architecture of engagement, they enable something new: They allow you to talk forever to no one other than yourself. “Every time theres been a new technology, it’s rewired socialization, especially for kids,” Vasan told me. “TV made kids passive spectators. Social media turned things into this 24/7 performance review.” In that respect, generative Al is following a familiar pattern. But the more time children spend with chatbots, the fewer opportunities they'll have to develop alongside other people—and, as opposed to all the digital distractions that have existed for decades, they may be fooled by the technology into thinking that they are, in fact, having a social experience.
