On this #NationalDayOfMourning I want to shine a light on my ancestral home, where my parents and their parents (& their parent's parents) and so on were born: #Sogamoso #Colombia (I was born in #Bogotá). This is the land of #ElDorado. Here are a few pieces of the MANY beautiful works of art in town
A mural depicting our indigenous heritage and ancestry on a wall on the main road (la 11). The local natural world is also depicted here. There are two indigenous people underneath the sun, a Jaguar and a macaw on either side of them, with flowers, plants and varieties of corn, including black corn, bursting forth from behind. To the left is a large depiction of a beehive with beautiful cells being filled with honey. A beautiful sculpture of one of our Caciques (kah see keh .. or Chief) named Sugamuxi. Underneath the statue is a plaque commemorating his achievements and honoring him and our people. Behind the sculpture is a traditional motif in rusty reds and yellowy beiges. It can be found en El Museo Arqueológico Suamox. Also en El Museo Arqueológico Suamox can be found a gorgeous mural, among many others, depicting the mythology of my people. There are several deities depicted in blues and golds: #Chiminigagua, #Bachué , #Sué , #Chia and more. Gold is a symbol of our people, and most of it was stolen and taken to Spain, melted down and used for other purposes, most often their churches. A mural depicting one of our Caciques adorned in gold and blue feathers, the Templo Del Sol (Temple of the Sun), botanical motifs, containers with the fruits of the harvest, a snail shell and gold statuettes of my ancestors.
