We have a research question to put to the group about this photo of #Brunel that no one on our #CliftonSuspensionBridge team has seen before.

We can't seem to find the image or mention of it online anywhere. Have you seen it before or know anything about it?

The Avon Gorge is full of leafy trees and a Paddle Steamer sails underneath the bridge in a full River Avon. The photo has been hand-coloured, as was the style, so the trees appear a muted green, both towers of the bridge and the abutment are red and the caps on the towers are yellow. It appears to have been done in a hurry or by a relatively unskilled person, as the lines are not crisp and the colours quite simple.

On 11 March 2012 #CliftonSuspensionBridge hanger, Leigh Woods South No. 34 was replaced as part of refurbishment works. The hanger had been installed between May and July 1864, during the final months of construction.

This year, the #CliftonSuspensionBridge has been undergoing one of the biggest refurbishment projects that ever happen around here (about once ever 20 years).

Can you guess what that is? Here's a hint, 100 years ago when they finished the job they'd have to start again.

We've been getting a lot of questions
about lighting recently, which makes sense as the
#CliftonSuspensionBridge looks a lot different (darker),
than is normally does at the moment.

The #CliftonSuspensionBridge Museum will be closed today, due to the weather conditions. The 2:00pm Bridge Tour has also been cancelled.

We want to ensure our staff and volunteers stay safe and don’t have to travel in. We intend to re-open tomorrow as normal, but please check before you set off.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

Hotwell House (pictured left c. 1860) was built in 1822 and named the Royal Clifton Spa. It was demolish (pictured right 1867) in order to widen the river, allowing even larger ships to access the docks.

You can see between the first and second photos the #CliftonSuspensionBridge was finished!

Bridge Closure 📣

The #CliftonSuspensionBridge will be closed to vehicles and cyclists all weekend from 7:00pm tonight until Monday at 7:00am. Pedestrians will still be able to cross using the north footway, but the bridge may be busier than normal.

The #CliftonSuspensionBridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic and cyclists from 7:00pm on Friday 16 May until 7:00am on Monday 19 May.

The footway will be open for pedestrian crossings and the museum will be open all weekend.

#DidYouKnow that two competitions were held to design the #CliftonSuspensionBridge? Anyone could enter, including at least six different Williams.

Before the competition though another William, the aptly named William Bridges, put forward his own design for a monumental stone bridge at Clifton.
