The Lokifesto: A Bad God’s Guide to Reading was launched at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) during the launch event for Loki: A Bad God’s Guide to Causing Chaos , the fifth title in the series. On 21 September, Stowell presented the Lokifesto to teachers, librarians, booksellers, authors and illustrators at the Children’s Books Ireland (CBI) Conference in Dublin. In the Lokifesto, there are six 'commandments' in the mischievous voice of Loki himself, encouraging children to embrace reading on their own terms, whether that means 'reading with your ears', enjoying comics and other picture-led books, or choosing short and accessible texts. With Loki’s wicked encouragement, the Lokifesto aims to give children confidence, autonomy and, above all, permission to enjoy reading whatever and however they wish. Walker Books is working in partnership with The Reading Agency to distribute 100 free library packs across the UK. Each pack contains a Lokifesto poster, a Trickster Trail rune-decoding activity, a copy of Loki: A Bad God’s Guide to Causing Chaos , and a set of 'Pranks in Progress' door hangers. The release of the Lokifesto comes as the publishing industry is working to address the national reading crisis, which was reported on by the National Literacy Trust. It is also a time when the children’s graphic novel and audio markets are seeing significant growth, showing that children and families are digesting content in ever more varied ways. Amid a reading crisis, we so often tell children to read more but then suck the pleasure out of it by telling them, ‘don’t read THAT’ or ‘you MUST read THIS’. I wanted to suck out the judgement instead and remind children that reading can be a source of rebellion and anarchy. The Lokifesto is a message to all children: There is no wrong way to read – read whatever and however you want. Reading belongs to you." Senior commissioning editor Non Pratt said: "Louie’s market-leading Loki books, which have now sold over 400,000 copies, and year-round event programme provide the perfect platform for her launch this Lokifesto: a way of empowering young people to choose their own definition of what it means to be a reader. The six commandments are for all readers – existing and possible – whether they are familiar with Loki’s mischief or not. We can’t wait to see young people rebel against reading ‘rules’!"
