☃️ -6 just now, -9, possibly lower, forecast here in the High Peak. I'll check the max/min thermometer in the coldframe tomorrow 🥶

Eagerly waiting for the first seeds of the season to germinate: various salads & onions, spinach and carrots are already outside in the coldframe, while the brassicas like broccoli 🥦 and cauliflower first get some extra warmth inside to get started 🌱

A Woodpecker on the nuts.

Soon afterwards, it flew up to the tree where 2 youngsters pestered it for food.

Feel-good garden moments, just because:
Yuzu sapling + rosemary that made it through another coastal BC winter. Still anticipating late-winter cold snaps. In the coldframe: new growth on over-wintered beets and leeks, and a Camellia sinensis (tea) plant that I vowed to nurse to health.

Morning all.
I rescued this coldframe from going to landfill in 2016, upcycled it changing colour schemes as ideas evolved, it's now rotten & beyond repair so I'm going to give this area a small revamp & restyle adding pots, plants & tiered shelves to display finds & makes...

🌱Some more of last year’s Nemesia, along with a container of succulents, both of which we stashed in the coldframe greenhouse for the winter which gave both survived and are now starting to thrive. The new greenhouse we are building out of glass should hopefully work even better for this.

🌱The nasturtiums in some of the larger mixed flower planters we stashed in the coldframe for the winter not only survived, they’re trying to take over. Getting them planted in the gardens is therefore a priority. Problem is, almost everything in there, both wintered over and newly sown is now ready!

Afternoon folks … & so warm!
I do like a bit of upcycling. Never throw away your failing clothes horses … they can transition into the garden 😀👍🏼

It's 40 here. It was torture working in the greenhouse because it's a coldframe...no heat

Gymnocalycium parade, G. berchtii and G. kieslingii respectively. In the group photo on the left is G. ragonesei. The warmer temperatures did their work. I grow them alongside Ptero- & Austrocactus in a coldframe with steel mesh (for fresh air) on all sides.

I keep the Snowflakes in a coldframe with a screened top. Edgewood Gardens has several kinds. Chipmunks are a threat even though they are supposedly poisonous. Bulbs eventually flower here even when dry.

When it gets below freezing do you cover your #coldframe or brush off the snow? Trying to figure out if I should just leave blankets/snow on tomorrow since it will be 25 degree high...

COLDFRAME - take 2

(First try: voles ate all my plants. Twice. So I gave up)

This time:
- cardboard on the grass
- wire mesh secured to bottom of frame

Yesterday: temp went from low of 46f to high of 73.

Left window opens automatically with warmth.

I like your coldframe. Were square bales accessible down here still I would be doing something comparable (full square of bales w/ windows on top).

These beautiful pansies were a Mother’s Day gift last May. They flowered beautifully all last summer & fall in this dappled shade location and withstood multiple heatwaves with 40’C highs. We moved them into our coldframe greenhouse for winter and thus far, they are surviving well.
