Mimaliz School of Cooking and Baking at Ondangwa recently launched its lunch box packing training for children. Magano Akudhenga Lizazi, the chef and owner of the school, said they will teach children to make beef burgers, scrambled eggs and chicken sandwiches. Training is open to those aged from 6 to 13 years old, but adults are also encouraged to join. Training will take place on 21 June. Lizazi said the training also aims to encourage responsibility, promote healthy eating habits, build life skills, boost confidence and encourage creativity. “We want to teach youngsters how to take ownership of their daily activities. We want to improve our future leasers how to become more aware of food choices when involved in the process, which can lead to healthier eating habits … Packing lunch involves planning, decision-making and time management which are essential life skills that benefit them long term,” Lizazi said. Lizazi said when children are able to pack their own lunch boxes it reduces parental load and lightens the daily burden on parents while empowering kids to contribute to family routines. Lizazi said it also encourages creativity and inspires children to explore in different food combinations and learn to enjoy a wider variety of meals. “Its always a good idea to teach them to be responsible at a younger age which will be embedded in their lives as adults to always be able to make decisions and help develop their ability to make choices,” Lizazi said. Lizazi said she saw the need to launch this training to fill a gap, and benefit both children and adults. She was also motivated by the benefits she witnessed when one of her daughters began packing her own lunch. “I would love [my children] to be productive and self sufficient when they grow up. I would also love to share this with other children so they become independent and also enjoy this experience with their families,” Lizazi said.
