Nice to be in Bologna today for #csvconfv9 and starting with a talk by @rahulbot.bsky.social!

A toolbox with surveys, charts, spreadsheets, is definitely useful, but cannot be enough, says @rahulbot.bsky.social at #csvconf #csvconfv9. What does a bigger toolbox look like, then? What are those other methodologies that can help build mirrors rather than windows?

How can we use data as a campfire, something that brings people together, in order for them to accomplish what they need, what they desire? Data murals is a way to do this: yes to spreadsheets, bigger YES to spreadsheets drawn up on walls!

A picture is worth a thousand words. That's how the saying goes, right? #csvconfv9 #csvconf @sarapetti.bsky.social keynote talk!

@sarapetti.bsky.social is taking us along the ODE journey which was anything BUT a linear path. I love the emphasis on the failures, which are an essential part of any journey, but are mostly kept hidden away. #csvconf #csvconfv9

"The app logic can help with data literacy" - I really like this, because it shows once again that a technical solution without a framework around it that makes sense and it's capable of answering questions and meeting users needs - is worth ZERO. @sarapetti.bsky.social at #csvconf #csvconfv9
September 10, 2025 at 10:28 AM
The hard, hard, hard lesson is mostly always the same: technology alone is not enough. People need contexts, resources, training material, opportunities. Space and time. This, I think, is the main reason around tech and data failures.

#csvconfv9 is ready to kick off! The venue is stunning, coffee is flowing, and talks are gonna be beautiful! Stay tuned, as I'll try to post here and there :) @csvconf.bsky.social

First problem identified - and this is gonna resonate with absolutely everyone I think - data portals are usually built for compliance or delivery, and not for they people that need the data. @ondatait.bsky.social, sounds familiar? #csvconf #csvconfv9

Love to see the diverse team behind Data4Change! Nobody with a unique set of skills, because looking at data and making sense of data and especially making sure data can bring a change is definitely a complex task and the toolbox needs to be big and rich! #csvconf #csvconfv9

Second piece by @rahulbot.bsky.social: data sculptures. Take a chart, a line with numbers and numbers and a trend, and you transform it into art: 1659 pieces of forks and stuff and there you have it. A data sculpture that brings across the importance of a topic like food security #csvconf #csvconfv9

My next pick will be about something very dear and near to @ondatait.bsky.social mission and the issues it faces continuously: "Beyond the CSV: Why most data portals fail and how to make yours succeed" #csvconf #csvconfv9
September 10, 2025 at 9:14 AM
This sounds trivial, but data portals are often created backwards, trying to fulfill a need without really understand it. Again, compliance and delivery should not be the driving forces. What does the user need? #csvconf #csvconfv9

It sounds to me A LOT of it boils down to a culture around #OpenData that is still not rooted in what we do and how we do it. Data is (still?) mostly an afterthought, something that comes later, when someone realizes compliance is not achieved or honor badges cannot be given out. #csvconf #csvconfv9

This is depressing, sigh. We move on to how data can help in fighting disinformation, and hope to feel less bad about it.
The Maldita.es database of claims stores a few elements around claims - channels, timestamps, sources (see frequently forwarded messages). #csvconf #csvconfv9

#TheTechWeWant useful, simple, long lasting, solving real problems. This sounds so good, but so damn hard, too.
The open question - for me - is always: how do you build a community and make sure people stick and keep showing up? I have failed at this so many times in the past.

All of this together builds up what @rahulbot.bsky.social calls "popular data". A lot of this and much more is written up in his book, Community Data, go have a look. #csvconf #csvconfv9

Another piece in @rahulbot.bsky.social story: data music, something that helps to "feel" the data. The example brought forward is around climate change - talking about it can be hard, can we facilitate this, somehow? #csvconf #csvconfv9
