The mosaic emblema was found in the floor of a cubiculum (bedroom) of the Casa della Matrona Ignota, Pompeii. Perhaps the matron of the house.

Date ca. 27 BCE-68 CE.

This mosaic portrait of a Roman woman from #Pompeii is a real rarity. The tesserae are quite small, allowing for a painterly effect - we can even see that her pearl necklace and pearl and gold earrings are Julio-Claudian in design. 🏺 1/

Here’s a rarity in the Roman world: a mosaic portrait. Made of extremely small tesserae - opus vermiculatum - it depicts a staid young woman, almost matronly. Her dark hair is parted in the middle and we can see a complicated braided bun at the back of her head, since this image is in 3/4 view. She’s wearing a pearl necklace, and pearl and gold earrings, identifying this as from the Julio-Claudian period. She was found in the floor of a cubiculum (bedroom) of the Casa della Matrona Ignota, Pompeii. Julian-Claudian era (27 BC - 68 CE). Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Napoli (MANN inv. 124666)

A cubiculum was a private room in a high status Roman house. Sometimes used as a bedroom, it could also be used a private study, library, or for private business.
The remains of a late 1stC BCE villa were discovered during excavations under the 16th century Villa Farnesina in Trastevere, Rome.

A rarity for #FrescoFriday: a ceiling in #fresco reconstructed in situ in #Herculaneum, with a complex form. Through the back window of this #cubiculum we can see a little outdoor #lararium, stripped of its decoration. Here we finally get a sense of the whole room. #AncientBluesky 🏺
FRESCOED CEILING, BEFORE 79 CE. HERCULANEUM, HOUSE OF THE BLACK SALON, CUBICULUM There aren't many buildings in any ancient city around Vesuvius that have surviving ceilings, though in both Pompeii and Herculaneum there were many buildings with upper levels. However, in some houses in Herculaneum enough of the decoration survived for the ceilings to be able to be reconstructed. In the gigantic domus (VI.13) called the House of the Black Salon, not only the large eponymous tablinum but the little cubiculum 17 has a rebuilt ceiling. Both are suspended ceilings, with surprisingly complex forms, some shallow barrel vaults interrupted by flat recesses and flanked by further flat sections. This house, like the more famous House of the Vettii in Pompeii, probably belonged to a freedman, in this case L. Venidius Ennychus, whose name was recovered from some wooden-framed wax tablets. He was considered eligible to be one of the Augustales, which confirms both his wealth and his freedman status. The frescoes here are predominantly red frames and garlands on a white background, and are Second Style, resembling fresco work in the Domus Aurea and hence possibly dating to the late 60s CE.

MOSAIC EMBLEMA WITH CHARIOTEER AND HORSE, 193-235 CE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME This magnificent emblema comes from a cubiculum in the gigantic villa of the Severan emperors at Baccano at the fifteenth mile outside Rome along the via Cassia. As it was excavated unscientifically during the exciting period of 1869-1870, we don't know the configuration of this floor, only that it had four emblemata, each representing one factio or team of charioteers in the Circus Maximus. This chap is driving for the factio albata, the Whites, as we can tell from his doublet which is made of closely woven white ribbons. He holds his roan horse by his reins, and faces us directly in his quadrigaria or short tunic. He holds a whip in one hand and wears a grey helmet. The horse is caparisoned with two ribands and looks well up to his task of winning races. These emblemata are made with extraordinary skill, a true high point of Roman mosaic work in the very difficult style of opus vermiculatum.

MOSAIC EMBLEMA, 1-50 CE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI NAPOLI This emblema or mosaic floor centrepiece comes from a house (IX.2.27) confusingly called the House of the Wedding of Neptune and Amphitrite, the House of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and the House of Princess Margherita. It was excavated in 1849 and 1869, and was found in a cubiculum on the east side of a peristyle, but it seems more suited to a triclinium. Against a white background surrounded by a black frame is this mosaic in opus vermiculatum. The upper half has a display of fish, a sea bass above three red mullets. A branch with leaves and berries divides the two registers and below it is a group of marsh birds bound together with a string: two mallards and an Egyptian goose. The colours and shading of the emblema are delicate, and the birds are shown in a credible depth of field.

I imagine it was something like this from cubiculum B of the villa found in the gardens of the Villa Farnesina in Trastevere. 1st cent. BC. Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome, 21.4.2011.

Some references in my cubiculum article, and I think some later work by Laura Nissin, but I think it’s not clear that there’s a clear custom in that respect (also “share a bedroom” is itself unclear).
