#31daysofgraves Day 18: Mistake
The carving mistake on the N was likely because the carver normally used the Cyrillic alphabet

Also the details on the engraving on the more complex characters are so nice. (BTW I am not claiming this ↓ is Gorton! I only know of “Gorton” as supporting Latin alphabet and Cyrillic.)

It's "We love Ukraine" in Cyrillic. Has its differences from Russian Cyrillic, mostly in spelling things.

Every password requires an English letter, two Greek letters, a Cyrillic letter, a Classical Chinese character, a Cetacean vocalization, a Klingon letter, a Vulcan letter, an Andorian antenna gesture, a Betazed emotion, and a Medusan energy signature.

And why is that clearly Russian propaganda, Mike? That's a Russian MiG. The AI slop text looks like it attempted to generate Russian using the English alphabet. That suggests it took prompts in Cyrillic.

Yeah with my last name there's also a Cyrillic variant, thanks to the Russian takeover of Poland, which made things even more complicated. Those Kendziors became Kendzyors because the "n" got written out in Cyrillic already, but the "io" got turned into Ë in Cyrillic and then into "yo" in the US

need to be honest. i never gaf about how to say Aegir in eng properly and always said it like Egir (on jp it's said like egiru so i decided it gives me permission to do that)
there's also no way in writing his eng pronunciation in cyrillic without it being nonsensical pile of vowels

Sometimes the new immigrants to North America would get a “pronounceable name” if the agents couldn’t handle the actual name. Thus a guy I know had his grandfather’s name “Blahuciak” (and in Cyrillic) changed to “Blanchard” because the guy at Halifax Pier 21 was like, nope!

It was frustrating to learn. Not because of the Cyrillic alphabet but because St Cyril was a monk and when he codified the language he used Latin as his template. So it’s full of the same insane level of conjugations, but not all fit the pattern.

Considering how much bloat Godot has been adding in the last couple of years to its codebase, maybe it's time to reconsider adding Skia to fix every goddamn font.

Eastern Europe Cyrillic to a vaguely Irish-spelling (and mispronounced) wallet last name here. There are so few of us (x < 30) I assume anyone else is a relative.

That time when trojan horse leader and killer of the federal PC party, Peter MacKay referred to an NDP led #ableg as "Albertastan". Then Kenney took the same playbook to wipe out the AB PCs.
In hindsight, this was deflection for their #Project2025 #christofascist plans.

Some of my ancestors were Polish, and their names were written in cyrillic. My theory: someone clearly wrote their name down in the cyrillic alphabet and then someone copied it using the english alphabet. It starts with the same letter. It goes up and down in the correct places. But that’s all.
Anyway, this is me saying that I promise you that a lot of people have had their names changed by immigration.

Amazing work.
(Full disclosure: I once misidentified a Russian warship with its name clearly visible in six-foot high letters, but at least I recognised it was Russian, and in my defence Cyrillic is hard!)

Ellis Island workers had no role in naming immigrants. Names on passenger lists were filled out at the port of embarkation by the shipping company. The names were written down the way that they sounded. Names "correctly" spelled in Yiddish or a Cyrillic language had no correct English equivalent.

One thing that got me when I first visited Greece was the Cyrillic alphabet.
Until then, I had a reasonably good expectation of understanding signage. Which is why landing in Athens was such a shock.
If you have a spare hour on the flight, I'd recommend learning the sounds of Greek letters.
