Chinook salmon have returned to the Klamath River in Oregon after being absent for more than a century. The announcement came roughly a year after the last of four major hydroelectric dams on the river was demolished.

This is great to see! Removing *all* the dams in the Pacific NW would not be feasible due to providing flood control for major cities plus about 45GW of hydroelectricity, but there are still more rivers and individual dams where it would make sense

The physical barriers of four dams are gone. Now, improved water quality in the river could be game changer for fish in the Klamath Basin.
Klamath River temperatures changed dramatically after dam removal. That’s helping salmon swim farther upstream
When water is colder, salmon are healthier and use less energy when they're migrating upstream. Before the removal of the dams, the reservoirs on the Klamath River would get hot over the summer and release warm water throughout the fall, taking a toll on those salmon.

This is likely cheating since it's not my pics, but someone else's YT vids. However, currently I am low key obsessed with baby beavers after learning that they make human baby noises & build dams out of toys. So, sharing.

This really shows how awful dams are, and how important it is to remove them.
It's also important to note that many of the same benefits of dam removal to rivers also result from forest conservation, restoration, and forest practices reforms.

Here’s some good news. Amazing news. 1 year after the Klamath tribe got those 4 dams removed from the Klamath river, the Chinook are returning.
Somebody need to get a "good news" thread going or something because the regular news is looking ugly today lol

So apparently the version of the article I've read is quite heavily edited from the original and used to be way, way worse?

Russia started it.
Russia has destroyed at least one major dam and caused damage to several others, including the Kakhovka, Oskil, and Kryvyi Rih dams. These attacks are believed to be part of a broader effort to weaken Ukraine's critical infrastructure.

I think this is bullshit, since a flood from the Belgorod Reservoir, which dams the Siversky Donets River, would wash into Ukraine and cause devastation in Ukraine.
