Facebook leads MTC data use
Facebook is the most used social media application by Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) subscribers, with WhatsApp coming in second. TikTok ranked third, followed by YouTube and Instagram. This is according to the recently released telecommunications sector performance review by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (Cran). “This trend highlights the ongoing shift in consumer preferences toward data-intensive, multimedia-driven platforms,” reads the report. Globally, Facebook has 3.07 billion users, and in 2024, the company’s annual revenue reached a staggering US$164.5 billion. In the first three months of the year, nearly three-quarters of all the data MTC’s customers used went towards social media apps and websites. “About 71% of MTC’s total data usage, amounting to 29 million GB, was consumed on social media platforms. This reinforces the dominance of social media as the primary medium for communication and entertainment,” says the report. Cran spokesperson Mufaro Nesongano says the telecommunication sector recorded an overall increase in revenue in the reported period. Data revenue alone was standing at N$831 million. “Data revenue grew by 4% in the first quarter of 2025, continuing the upward trend observed in previous quarters, consistent with the ongoing increase in data consumption,” says Nesongano. According to Nesongano, voice revenue remained stable, however, SMS revenue declined by 14%. This shows that less people are using SMS to communicate. Additionally, the number of active SIM cards remained relatively stable. “However, the proportion of SIM cards used for internet access declined from 60% to 58%, primarily due to a 2% decrease in mobile broadband usage via mobile phones,” says Nesongano. The sector also recorded declines in cybersecurity crimes. “In terms of cybersecurity, reported cyber vulnerabilities decreased by 16%, falling from 641 000 to 541 000,” he says. According to Nesongano, this was mostly due to improved patch management and enhanced security protocols. The number of reported cyberthreat events surged from 62 000 to 260 000. “Most vulnerabilities were associated with the open CPE WAN Management Protocol, underscoring the necessity of restricting public access to management interfaces,” adds Nesongano.
