#dendrometers
An absolutely amazing 2 days of nerding out about #dendrometers! I'm feeling so inspired by everyone's research!! Looking forward to seeing where we can take #DendroNet . ✉️drop me a message if you want to be kept updated 🤓🌳🌲

That's still super powerful data! I just saw a dataset from those type of dendrometers read every 2 weeks for 10+ years and they beautifully document tree decline before mortality (the work involved though 😱)!

Nice! Will be interesting to see what you find data-wise but also maintenance, etc. I’m wondering if you considered putting the point dendrometers on the same side of the tree?
April 24, 2025 at 5:30 PM
Hi Bob, it's tricky to manage since both point dendrometers require you to drill into the tree, it's hard to know if this will create artifacts in the growth, hence the offset. Then if we keep them in alignment but increase the spacing, it may well also result in different values! Insights welcome!

Update from Sophie & SP1: In Großmutz, CO₂, N₂O & ET fluxes were measured using manual closed canopy chambers. Dendrometers & sap flow sensors were also installed. Back at @zalf.bsky.social, a prototype for the automated chamber systems to measure gas fluxes is being built. #formula #agroforestry

Team #OptiForValue are out in force at CS1 super test site for OptiForValue in Maissau, Austria, working both above and below the forest canopy to take a complete set of forest data measurements!

We've launched our first large dendrometer monitoring sites as part of WestWARD! 🌲Excited to gain deeper insights into forest dynamics under climate stress - with 80+ dendrometers per site continuously tracking tree growth and water use. Learn more: www.lss.ls.tum.de/tgw/projects...

1st post! Great to highlight my PD project:
LUQTEE, the Luquillo Throughfall Exclusion Experiment!

We study how trees cope under drought, with 3 experimental 20x20m drought plots in Puerto Rico. Point dendrometers, sapflow sensors, water potentials. And more! Pics from last week helping building.

Spent the week installing #dendrometers and #climate sensors in southern Sweden where we are looking at the impacts of chronic drought on Spruce🌲 health, soil 🦠🍄‍🟫 and bark beetle🪲 attack. #sapflow and water potential tensiometers are coming next week! @Maartje klapwijk

My first PhD paper got published recently 🌱
We explored how local neighborhood impacted tree water status, using high-resolution dendrometers. Turns out, it does! - under drought. Species identity matters a lot, too: check the paper to see who profited, it's 🔓

Au-Wom Wombat Forest #eddycovariance tower spring clean and check ups. No water ingress in this anemometer 😃 And no damage from the storm on Wednesday, only one tree down in the plot. The DIY Lora #dendrometers survived winter too - mostly.

Decentlab DL-ZN1 dendrometers record stem radius every ten minutes, revealing real-time insights into growth, water balance, and drought stress.
Sound artist Marcus Maeder transforms these signals into sound — making climate change not just visible, but audible.

📢Over 80% of Czech forest 🌲ecosystems are experiencing #drought stress, as shown by tree water deficit measured via dendrometers. Not the best start to the growing season. Stay tuned with our real-time #biomonitoring system — #DendroNetwork - dendronet.cz
