I am sure one can find some very weird but interesting variations in the West-Flemish dialects on the subject;)

Aye but, there is also dialects to contend with. I haven’t a clue what someone from London or Birmingham is saying to me, they sound Welsh to me. And, equally they haven’t a clue what I say to them. I’m from Scotland, so different country entirely. Still, geordie get 100% of the time. Strange intit.

There's also 'bruiloft' and 'vijftig' within the inherited lexicon. Certain dialects have forms like 'vichtig'.

One thing I need to find out what "Moe" means in Chinese (all dialects), regardless of tone. I'm going to "Bite the Wax Tadpole" myself.

I know what "moe" means in Japanese. It's weird and gross. (Luckily I don't pronounce my name "moé") "Mo" is just も/モ— a kana. No implied meaning (hopefully)

2/ ... also find 'zoft' (vs. Dutch 'zacht') and 'after' (vs. 'achter').

Cases like these can also be found in Hollandic dialects.

'Gekoft' survives in many regional languages in the Low Countries - until recently also in my own Brabantian dialect.

The sound change was never completed in all regions. The fact that Dutch has 'gekocht' is due to the specific Hollandic dialects it was created from.

In Brabantian, you can ... 1/

UML is the standardized visual language - inheritance, composition, MSCs, user diagrams, FSMs, etc etc. There are also dialects of markup language (eg plantUML) to describe/generate those diagrams. Unless you're hacking or inventing your own diagram types then you're essentially using UML.

Pacific Islander dialects are so beautiful 😍

Along the same vein: I met an Algerian here in Sharjah who told me (quite innocently) that there was an ongoing project to unify all Berber dialects into one form of vocabulary and grammar.

I'm sure it will turn out splendidly, just like the efforts to unify "Arabic Sign Language".
Recently the whole group shifted to "Arabic dialects" such as Somali ... Amazigh ... Tigray ...

People mentioning that Amazigh is not Arabic are shouted down by an appeal to the opinions of علماء اللسانيات "experts in linguistics" who have "confirmed" that all Amazigh is an "Arabic dialect". 🤨

For years I've been in an Arabic Facebook group where people share examples from Arabic dialects. Many of the frequent contributors are from places like Chad, Algeria, rural Yemen, northern Iraq ... So it's quite nice to see them chatting.

I’ve just launched "Interactive LAJ," an interactive map powered by OpenStreetMap for the Language Atlas of Japan Database (LAJDB)! 🗺️🌐

You can search and zoom through linguistic data to explore regional dialects and variations.

Check it out here: gitomochang.github.io/interactive-...

It sure is. Helpful sometimes but it’s really hobbled by accents and regional dialects.

Humans are too but we’re better at them.

It works in Flemish too but all the dialects don't fit in one skeet.
I googled it inspired by Focus, Hocus Pocus, covered by many—eg The Vandals & Iron Maiden—but few sing vocals. Transatlantic just got Thijs to sing.
Not even Gabriela Gunčíková touched it: she sang Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody over it!

Words are funny.

I like seeing the differences in English speaking dialects to see who has the best word and tbh I think America takes the lead at most straightforward.

The aussies live on another planet.

Feeling the heft of AI's influence, I yearn for human quirks to guide us back to genuine expression. Our polished prose echoes with an emptiness. Let's turn to imperfections as cultural lifelines, preserving our humanity amid digital dialects. #AIFatigue #EmbraceImperfection 🌐✍️

I find plenty of evidence of bogie meaning various kinds of cart in northern dialects, so the extension to bin lorry is easy enough. But I *don't* find any indication of this usage extending to people. It's not in any of the slang, dialect or Scots dictionaries I checked, anyway. It's a wee bit odd.

If you do not know: Palestinian food is some of the most delicious and healthiest there is.
And if you would like to learn Arabic, the Levantine dialect is one of the easiest and most beautiful dialects... so a good place to broaden your horizon
🍉🇵🇸🍉I've been taking Arabic classes with Ahmed, and his Tabbouleh Language School, for over a year now. It's been wonderful. Ahmed and his wife Bianca are in Nablus, Palestine, and are offering a variety of Arabic and cooking classes. They have asked me to share this flyer 👇

ICYWW, elision of initial vowels in forms like this is common to the dialects of northern Oman and Ruus Al Jibal.

But I can't remember if بن is spelled this way among northern Omani writers.
