About two thirds of the way through Anne Michaels’ *Held*, and the near universal praise has me a bit baffled. The prose is very highly polished, of course, but to the extent that it feels like a demonstration of artistry rather than addressing something beyond the novel itself.

Hi all~
Today's stream was for the most part on the 'Be back Dreckly!' screen and eventually ended early due to an emergency.
Thank you to those that stuck around! Will try again on Saturday.
Have a good week and hopefully see you then!

Maybe replace it with the Cornish 'dreckly', which, as far as I can tell, means some time between now and the heat death of the Universe.

I notice time a lot - it was clearly different in my brief false start with Irish! And I’m from Cornwall, which (still?) has a ductile expression of time in “dreckly” - ie “directly” - ie “a value between ‘now’ and ‘a receding future date’”.

Be it the down-to-earth, light-hearted workman, who does things "dreckly*", or the dazzling, sparkling light off the pristine waters, Cornwall is filled with Diamonds - if you know where to look. Taken up the road from Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth. #art #photography #fineart #cornwall #coastallife

I remember this from school days when I lived there nearly 40 years ago. Seem to remember it's because they are only attached to the rest of UK by 4 miles of land? Independence dreckly! Dreckly obviously.
