We want to #shutdown #AlisoCanyon. 10 Years ago TODAY Earthworks used an OGI camera to capture the historic gas blowout. Residents still deal w/ the fallout from toxics & chemicals. bit.ly/Aliso-Canyon

Giants appear in mythology all across European mythology. These giants are often linked to ancient ruins & earthworks that they were said to have made. According to some, Stonehenge was originally brought from Africa to Ireland by giants. There’s even an earthwork of a giant in Dorset, England.

On this wonderful #HillfortsWednesday we look back at issue 68 of AARGnews where our Editor's Picture focussed on Uffington Castle - an Iron Age univallate hillfort. Environment Agency LiDAR shows incredible detail, including medieval ridge and furrow within the hillfort itself!

For #HillfortsWedesday this week, a double helping of #HillfortsFromMilesAway - here you can see both Liddington Castle and Barbury Castle from the Roman site at Groundwell Ridge, Swindon. Yes you can. See if you can spot them without having to check the zoomed-in images first.

"To say nothing of the earthworks it has destroyed, the railway offers the Field Archaeologist nothing but the tortures of Tantalus. It hurries him helpless thru the most attractive country while it creeps & lingers amidst the most repulsive buildings. If it gives a glimpse of a passing earthwork…

Scheduling a barrow cemetery to protect it from the railway reminds me of what J.P. Williams-Freeman said in 1915 on "the best way to visit our ancient earthworks". After foot, bicycle, horse and car, "There is one other mode of locomotion which must be mentioned only to be condemned—the railroad… 🏺

Expensive but works a treat. Especially if I've been doing earthworks and digging etc. Still works even when sweaty so perfect.
Stick it on my work expenses too.

Here's a piece of Hadrian's Wall trivia:
When built in the 120s, the Wall had a rear set of banks & ditch called the Vallum. When the frontier was moved north to the Antonine Wall in 138, the Vallum was "slighted" (taken out of use) by leveling path thru it every 45 yards. They're still there.

The Great Mound in Anderson, Indiana
Among the ten earthwork formations in Mounds State Park, there is only one Great Mound—appropriately named. Earthworks are monumental structures built from shaped earth, often used by ancient cultures for ritual, burial, or astronomical purposes. The Great Mound is the largest in Indiana, a circular enclosure nearly a quarter mile in circumference, with an embankment rising nine feet high. Over time, theories about its purpose ranged from burial site to religious amphitheater, with some even suggesting Egyptian builders, a lost tribe of Israel, or ancient astronauts.
