One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is a treasured part of the 7th grade ELA curriculum.

My student, Cora, discovered that it’s part of a series and went out and bought the all three books for herself.

Literature, in essence, is just the study of human nature, the human experience. Maybe that's why people want to ban books--they see themselves in the ink on the pages, and they don't like what they see. It's easier to hide it away than to face it.

To begin with, I include a specific reference to AI in my course syllabus: “ChatGPT and other AI software have grown in prevalence and ease of use recently. Submitting content written by AI software as your own in any element of your work, big or small, is academically dishonest. I cannot assess your proficiency from a submission that is not your own work. Do not cheat yourself out of an education by using AI when you should be doing your own thinking and writing. AI can be a great tool for helping you learn. Together we will explore some of those possibilities.”
