Enhance your USMLE Step 1 prep with this DiGeorge Syndrome flashcard. Review key points including 22q11 deletion, thymic and parathyroid hypoplasia, hypocalcemia, and recurrent infections to strengthen your understanding of immunology and developmental embryology.

U01.17.035 DiGeorge Syndrome (22q11 Deletion Syndrome)
Study this flashcard to identify the genetic defect, embryologic origin, and key clinical features of DiGeorge Syndrome. Recall how a 22q11 deletion leads to failure of the 3rd and 4th pharyngeal pouches to develop, causing thymic and parathyroid hypoplasia with recurrent infections and hypocalcemia.

(To clarify, for those who think they’re geniuses of embryology, the simulated heartbeat on ultrasounds early in pregnancy is based off the electrical activity of a small collection of cells, not a beating heart. Also, a heartbeat once developed is one requirement for viability — not the only one.)
