Had a bit of a laid back weekend and filled it with a lot of my backlogged watchlist (and a couple of friend's recommendations)

I think I'm going to need a little break on body horror & French existentialism for my next couple watches

Jean Paul Sartre was a Frenchman with very poor personal hygiene who liked to strangle squirrels and eat their flesh raw. He wrote poems about it that detailed "existentialism" which emphasizes that "existence precedes essence," meaning when you eat too many gummies you cannot hit the toilet bowl.

It's a more aspirational film than The Crow. Yes, it's influential in its cool expressionist vibe and existentialism.
But narratively it's all over the shop and has no emotional weight. The Crow is much better at telling an emotional story. So they're great at different things.

5. what is something you want to explore that you haven't yet?

I'd like to go all-in on his existentialism, as I tend to be a pretty dramatic writer.

Having a character get truly close to him that can understand his whims and abrasiveness without being judgemental.

It's a tough ask, considering-

Just like any philosophy, there are different strains/schools of nihilism. There's the main meaning, akin to existentialism (nothing has meaning, the universe destroys itself, etc.) & more violent ideology (nothing has meaning but destruction.) The manosphere has birthed some nasty patriarchal ones.

Applying formal logic to existentialism involves using logical rules to analyze existential concepts
like using existential generalization to move from a specific instance to a general claim about existence, as in proving "there exists a talented person" after establishing "Bruno Mars is talented"
