European Peacock butterfly
(Aglais io Linnaeus, 1758)

Found in Europe and temperate Asia as far east as Japan, each wingtip it bears a distinctive, black, blue and yellow eyespot. The underside mimicking a dead leaf.

I'll let iNaturalist describe this butterfly: "The common buckeye is a medium-sized butterfly, typically brown, with a wingspan of \(1.5\) to \(2.75\) inches, known for its striking eyespots on its wings that can deter predators. Its upper forewings have two orange bars and a band with an ivory-bordered eyespot, while the hindwings have two large eyespots with an orange border. The underside is typically mottled brown." It was resting on a weathered, wooden fence rail.

They said, "No! Where do you find them?" I pointed to some scrub a couple of feet from us and said, "There's one right there." They were pretty stoked about it and thanked me for showing it to them. This is that exact same common buckeye.

Common Buckeye butterfly on a wild bergamot blossom. The flower is kind of a lavender purple while the butterfly's wings and thorax are a dusky brownish-gray with "prominent, dark-ringed eyespots on all four wings, similar to buckeye nuts. Key features include orange bars and a white band on the forewings, along with orange and brown patterns on the hindwings." Each eyespot is black and white and orange and purple and looks like a peek into a beautiful little universe.

A photo of the moth with spread wide. His forewings are orangish brown with a small dark, yellow bordered eyespot towards the front, ink stripes near his body, and a black stripe crossing down the sides. The hindwings are a bit more brown with the black stripe continuing. The eyespot is much larger black with yellow and then black in the center. There is some thought that these eyespots resemble the eyes of an owl which helps in deterring predation. A 2:1 magnification photo of the moth's eyespot, showing the individual scales. The weather here has been so cool and gray that my only new butterfly sighting was this Wood Nymph in the house. But the weather is warming up again and the Tall Boneset and Blue Mistflower are ready to bloom, so I'm hoping for more next week. #nativeplants #butterflies 🌱 🦋 #gardensky #gardening
A Common Wood-nymph butterfly rests with wings folded back on the glass window of an aluminum storm door. Its wings are pale beige and ivory with delicate closely-spaced striations of brown. On the lower wing there are two medium eyespots flanked by pairs of smaller spots, black with pale blue centers, while the top wing has a large swath of solid ivory with one large eyespot visible. (Another eyespot is hidden.) The body and legs are beige. Cercyonis pegala. Buds of Tall Boneset, Eupatorium altissimum, with a small red flower fly on one side. The buds look like clusters of cotton swabs. There seems to be a fine white husky dog hair in there as well, as usual. Tightly closed lavender buds of Blue Mistflower, Conoclinium coelestinum, surrounded by emerald-green leaves. A view of my island bed with Tall Boneset, Slender Mountain Mint, Bitter Sneezeweed in bloom, and Azure Sage not yet blooming. And passion vines, here and there. I feel like I shouldn't pull them again until the Gulf Fritillaries leave.

The male meadow brown is mainly brown with washed-out orange patches on the forewings. He has one eyespot on both forewings and none on the hindwings. He is nectaring on a Mayweed flower, which looks like a large Daisy, having a plump yellow centre surrounded by ~20 white finger-like petals.

Common buckeye on some butterfly weed. It is facing upward. The flowers are yellow on the top and red on the bottom with some red buds mixed in. There are some blurred green leaves in the background. The butterfly's entire body is brown. The forewing is also brown, but with several markings. The tip is brown, but just a little inside is a vertical white dash. Below that are three orange diagonal spots and next to the middle one is a black spot with a light blue spot inside. To the right is a long white stripe stretching from top to bottom. To the right of that, just below the middle, is a large black eyespot, surrounded by tan and brown outlines and with a light blue spot in the middle. Below it is an orange bar and to the right of it is a tan line. To the right of all that is a thick dark brown line that runs along the white stripe at the top and goes all the way down, bending around the eyespot. Finally, at the top, between the brown line and the body are two orange bars between darker brown lines. The hindwing is partially covered. Just under the forewing a partially covered eyespot can be seen, with another visible one just a little to the right. They look the same as the one on the forewing. Below and between them are a thick orange line going across the wing, then a thin brown line, a tan line, another thin brown line, a lighter brown line, another thin brown line, and a thin tan line going across the bottom.

🌏 Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) The Indian Peafowl is a large, ground-dwelling bird known for its sexual dimorphism. Males, or peacocks, have iridescent blue and green plumage, a fan-like crest, and a spectacular long train of "eyespot" feathers for courtship display. Females, or peahens, are duller, with brownish plumage and no train. Native to the Indian subcontinent, they are found in forests and cultivated land near water. The most numerous butterfly in the fields and meadows at the moment is another brown and orange butterfly, the Meadow Brown, Maniola jurtina, with the female showing more orange around the eyespot on the upperwing compared to the male. #BigButterflyCount
