When humans look at something we find beautiful our brains release dopamine, lifting mood & if we connect with what we're looking at oxytocin, giving us a sense of belonging.

🐝Just like us, bees eat different things at different temperatures (who wants soup in the summer?). Bombus bifarius likes to visit a cinquefoil (Potentilla pulcherrima) when it’s cooler, but prefers aspen fleabane (Erigeron speciosus) when it’s warm.

Not one of the usual "flower crab spiders", but a ground crab spider in the genus Xysticus taking advantage of a flower to catch lunch. This one was spotted on a prairie bioblitz in Missouri. #arachtober #arachtober2025 #spider 🕷️

My latest blog post: Five Fungi from Sweet Briar Marshes.

(The current list for the reserve is around 300 species. I've written about five of them - and a beetle that lives in fungi.)

The best time of year❤️🍁

A few late season asters hang on while the fall foliage peaks. There is no shortage of color this time of year in New England
