NASA Astronomy Hourly Picture - 2012-11-24: NGC 1365: Majestic Spiral with Supernova

Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is truly a majestic island universe some 200,000 light-years across. Located a mere 60 million light-years away toward the chemical constellation Fornax, NGC 1365 is a dominant member of the well-studied Fornax galaxy cluster. This sharp color image shows intense star forming regions at the ends of the bar and along the spiral arms, and details of dust lanes cutting across the galaxy's bright core. At the core lies a supermassive black hole. Astronomers think NGC 1365's prominent bar plays a crucial role in the galaxy's evolution, drawing gas and dust into a star-forming maelstrom and ultimately feeding material into the central black hole. Discovered on October 27, the position of a bright supernova is indicated in NGC 1365. Cataloged as SN2012fr, the type Ia supernova is the explosion of a white dwarf star.

A little scrapbook-like presentation of various touches and moments between Fornax (an au roe: roegadyn and au ra mix) and Ryssrael (a roegadyn). There's three small photos, the top and bottom one taped with little hearts, and the middle one appearing to be on top of them. There's sunflowers, red lilies of the valley, and a dandelion in various places, similar to pressed flowers. The first picture starting from the top is Fornax and Ryssrael kissing each other, smiling into the kiss, Fornax's hand around her neck and Ryssrael's is touching their jaw scales and also the back of their neck. The second picture is a closeup of Fornax gently holding and caressing one of Ryssrael's hands, her other hand placed over one of theirs. Fornax's claws trace along her wrapped hands, noticeably larger than her hands, but so delicate. The third picture is Fornax and Ryssrael lovingly touching their foreheads together, gentle smiles from both of them, in front of a patch of sunflowers. It's an iconic gesture of theirs!

This diagram shows a 4x upscaled crop of my Fornax Ultra Deep Field image with a selection of distant galaxies detected within the boundaries of the famous Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) Cross-checking against the available Hubble Ultra Deep Field catalogues using VizieR, approximately 190 galaxies were identified within the HUDF catalogued area. These galaxies range in magnitude from ~20 to 25, with the most distant ones being almost 12 billion light years away! I have selected some of the detected galaxies and shown them with a detail crop from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, each labelled with HUDF catalog number, redshift and distance. The crop boundaries are overlaid on my image, including official magnitudes of detected galaxies, and to the right is the Hubble Legacy Field and Hubble Ultra Deep Field at the same image scale. Assuming the HUDF to be representative of the entire image, and indeed the entire sky, this can be extrapolated to over 23,000 galaxies in my Fornax Ultra Deep Field alone, and over 2.5 billion galaxies visible in the entire sky at this depth! Hubble sees a galaxy 60 million light-years away This new NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows the galaxy IC 335 in front of a backdrop of distant galaxies. IC 335 is part of a galaxy group containing three other galaxies, and located in the Fornax Galaxy Cluster 60 million light-years away. As seen in this image, the disk of IC 335 appears edge-on from the vantage point of Earth. This makes it harder for astronomers to classify it, as most of the characteristics of a galaxy’s morphology — the arms of a spiral or the bar across the center — are only visible on its face. Still, the 45 000 light-year-long galaxy could be classified as an S0 type. These lenticular galaxies are an intermediate state in galaxy morphological classification schemes between true spiral and elliptical galaxies. They have a thin stellar disk and a bulge, like spiral galaxies, but in contrast to typical spiral galaxies they have used up most of the interstellar medium. Only a few new stars can be created out of the material that is left and the star formation rate is very low. Hence, the population of stars in S0 galaxies consists mainly of aging stars, very similar to the star population in elliptical galaxies. As S0 galaxies have only ill-defined spiral arms they are easily mistaken for elliptical galaxies if they are seen inclined face-on or edge-on as IC 335 here. Fornax (an au roe: roegadyn and au ra mix) standing in a rowboat that has just arrived at shore, the warmth of the sun on them, and distant palm trees and islands behind them. They're in their adventuring outfit that is a balance of armor, leather, and cloth, and they have a large knapsack on their back. There's a small journal, some colorful vials, and various herbs and plants hanging off of it, and they're holding a map, looking ahead with an eager smile for whatever their journey will be.
