In the run-up to the publication of my new book, The Great Resistance, on 6 Jan 2026 (link in bio), I’ll have a daily post featuring photos from two decades of research trips, along with a snippet from each of the book’s 35 chapters. Today: Guadeloupe

Normandy Mid-Morning Aura

While on the road to Mont Saint-Michel in France, we were graced with this vista of a field with a windmill in the mid-morning light.

#picoftheday is this mighty assembly of windmill rotor blades ready for shipment across Europe from the port of Le Havre. How anyone can find windmills ugly is beyond me.

The Netherlands does have a ton of issues, but I still love to escape from France to decompress here.

For a bit I'm in another country with local friends. So the mental load of politics from my home country feels lifted from my shoulders and so, I can breathe.

🌄 Next up was today's Cat 4 climb/bump in the road - Côte de Cassel. Located in French Flanders, Cassel provides some great views of the surrounding area. Plus you can check out the 18th-century windmill perched at 170m/557ft elevation to make your visit even more memorable. 3/4

We visited the Chateau de Montauban in Fontvieille during our trip to France earlier this month. The windmill on the property has been painted by many local masters (Daudet, Breyer, Van Gogh) and is an interesting energy transition analog 🔌💡(1/3)

Tilting at windmills is an idiom which means "attacking imaginary enemies", originating from Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote AND it is Trump’s strategy. Trump and the GOP are the party of Don Quixote. #DonQuixoteTrump #WindmillTariffs

Same for me in France, boys and girls were doing sewing , woodwork, techno etc... I still have my "windmill lamp" from these days... The funiest was the woodwork teacher ( former professionnal hired by the Education Nationale ) not a all at ease with girls...
