from Sotheby's webpage: the present work depicts the Casería de Buena Vista - also known as the Casería de la Bailarina - the childhood home of the famous Spanish dancer Pepita Duran y Ortega, grandmother of the English author and garden designer Vita Sackville-West. Its garden was dominated by an ornate form of cypress topiary known as a bailarina, consisting of several cypress trees in a circle, joined at the crown to resemble a gothic cupola reminiscent of Moorish architecture. Hiepes presents a plethora of attractive elements in a delightful landscaped patio. A large bench adorned with ceramic tiles bears a variety of spermatophyte plants in large glazed decorative flowerpots, each of its own design. There are also two open baskets—one with flowers and the other with sprays that might be jasmines arranged in the biznaga manner associated with Malaga—as well as flowers on the ground; a large pot of carnations and a fruit tree. Mir depicts the surroundings of the shrine of San Medir, a suburban area near Barcelona. Moving away from the prevailing academic schemes, he structures the composition in three horizontal strips: in the foreground he shows the orchard, in the background a triangular section in mauve tones leading to the cypress trees, and in the background, the shrine. The presence of a medieval building in a rural setting recalls the survival of Romantic models such as picturesqueness and the aesthetics of ruin.
