This is huge news!
UBC has developed an enzyme that can convert donor organs to type O, making them universal.
Normally a using organs of the wrong blood type causes the recipient's immune system to attack the organ, leading to failure.

Just on time for my intro lecture on #glycotime in 3D ⤵️🎉

The first successful human transplant of a kidney converted from blood type A to universal type O used special enzymes developed by the team led by Prof Stephen Withers and Prof Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu at UBC

I usually leave my garden flowers to the bees, as I don't have heaps (yet), but the gorgeous purple dahlia from Schiphol Airport is starting to fade so I thought I should continue to celebrate its beauty for a wee bit longer 💐😍 #gardening

And for #glycotime friends, fans of sialic acid, rejoice 💜

Imagine if the blood type of a donor organ no longer mattered.

Researchers from Canada and China used glycoenzymes FpGalNAc deacetylase and FpGalactosaminidase to "convert" a Type-A donor kidney into a Universal organ by removing unwanted A-antigens. Great glyco-work!! #glycotime

Using deuterium and neutron crystallography, the Imberty lab just cracked the atomic-level structure of the P. aeruginosa lectin, LecA, binding human sugars! 🧪

This structural insight is vital for designing new drugs. Great work, @anneimb.bsky.social team!

Have you wondered how nanoparticle protein coronas (e.g., Seer’s Proteograph XT) can help with glycoprotein enrichment in biofluids?

We were curious, too, and this new @riley-research.bsky.social pre-print led by outstanding postdoc @emmajays.bsky.social details our #glycotime investigations.
Can nanoparticles help us probe the glycoproteome?

The new pre-print from @riley-research.bsky.social seeks to answer this question using the Proteograph technology from Seer Inc.

Check out this lovely study on glycoproteins NP-enriched from biofluids here: chemrxiv.org/engage/chemr...
