To be clear: Using a GMRS rated radio for FRS is like driving a corvette at a go-kart track. You can absolutely do it, you're just using tech that's way overpowered for the purpose. It's like chopping kindling with a chainsaw. But it works.

Almost clueless on murs, and details might be different in Canada. SOME FRS and GMRS channels are shared, but not all. Their frequencies overlap, GMRS has more power. If you have GMRS repeaters in your area, GMRS might be better for you. You can talk back and forth on the shared channels

I really gotta decide how much I want "everything". When it comes down to it, I CAN just borrow a club radio whenever we're needing to use something besides GMRS. :)

I mean, sure, it is possible to carefully program a radio with GMRS and FRS frequencies, and even though it is technically illegal, if you do it right it is a victimless crime and nobody will be the wiser. But it’s not just a case of being able to transmit on any frequency you can program legally.

If you're going the GMRS route the Baofeng UV-5G lets you have a UV-5R except it's actually legal and still very cheap
