On #ThisDayInHistory in 1697, #StPaulsCathedral in #London was consecrated. The #gothic original was largely wrecked in the #GreatFireOfLondon in 1666. The new one, to a design by #ChristopherWren, was finally completed in 1710, and was the city's tallest structure until 1963.

Today, I climbed the #Monument. 311 steps up (& 311 back down too!). Only courtesy of my daughter I didn’t just climb it once but twice!!1244 steps!! The view is worth it. It is said if you lie it down it points to where the Great Fire of London started in 1666. #GreatFireOfLondon #London #History

Do you know of the #GreatFireOfLondon? #London has a monument for that, even though some anti-minority (including against #LGBT) lessons are still not learned.

A huge thank you to Churchwarden Brian for the excellent talk last night about some of the memorials and inscriptions at St Olave Hart Street and to Colin and our wonderful choir for the glorious service of Choral Evensong beforehand.

On this day in 1666 the Great Fire of London started.

The fire burned destroyed or damaged hundreds of private and church libraries across the city. Countless books and manuscripts were lost, some estimates but the cost of loss books at £150-200,000!

You know you're a history junkie when you keep thinking of the #GreatFireOfLondon of 1666 in relation to the poor folk suffering amidst the Great Fire of Los Angeles. The post-plague, then fire coincidence is haunting. I adore history, but this is a tough analogy as I think of friends/family.
